I came across this great blog/site this person has amazing collection of old indian photos some are from life magazine and few have been shared by others. Its a great effort - link below has hunting pictures some as late as 1965 for hunting tigers. The pictures are by category - so they are interesting and some really haunting and heart wrenching ones from Partition

Wonderful pics of a bygone era. It is easy to see how a person could get hooked on such activities. Of course, the regular person never got the chance to hunt like this. I'll admit, just seeing Lord Curzon was more than enough to get my hackles up. In that case, I could find myself rooting for the tiger, rather than George!

Yes, I had the same impression when I saw that photo.
I did not know that
Vogue Magazine had selected her as one of the World's top 10 most beautiful women.

India. The Jewel in the Crown.
Amazing snaps of an era gone by.
The first snap of a Tiger shoot on river Chambal 1952 is quite interesting. I believe that was a maneater which was shot by the late Maharaja. That's why you have the Chief Minister of the state also in the snap.
Interestingly there is a female tigress on the prowl in Chambal right now. She is not a maneater but has strayed out of Ranthambore. The forest Dept guys are working hard to capture her.
I'll admit, just seeing Lord Curzon was more than enough to get my hackles up.!
True. But we must also understand that this was a time when there were an estimated 40000 tigers in India.Curzon was instrumental in saving the Gir Lions. When the Nawab of Junagarh invited Curzon to hunt the last few lions in the country . Curzon not only declined the offer but asked the Nawab to save the species and put a complete ban on Lion hunting. Similarly the lady you see in the snap(his wife) was responsible for influencing her husband to put a ban on Rhino hunting in India.
The other snaps are equally amazing. Thanks for the link ngrewal.

True. But we must also understand that this was a time when there were an estimated 40000 tigers in India.
Prashant, my issue with Curzon has a lot of avenues: For one, there was his attempt to divide Bengal into East and West, which was ultimately unsuccessful. Then, there was the fact that he was an overwhelmingly arrogant loudmouth. Here's what his schoolmates thought of him:
My name is George Nathaniel Curzon,
I am a most superior person.
My cheeks are pink, my hair is sleek,
I dine at Blenheim twice a week.
In Britian during the first part of Asquith's government, newly minted peer Curzon was in the leadership of the "Ditchers," who refused to give up the prerogatives of the House of Lords, chiefly the power to block any taxes being levied on them. (They were called "Ditchers" because one of them said he'd defend the Lords' "rights" to the last ditch.) Then, at the end, Curzon finally left the Ditchers in the ditch and flip-flopped. But the most grievous sin of Curzon in my mind was his insistence on the "Curzon Line," where as Foreign Secretary, Curzon tried to cripple the reconstituted Poland after WW1 and make sure she was an ineffective "rump state," rather than a state that could make her own way sandwiched between Germany and the Soviet Union.
For these reasons, I think I'd rather have that picture reversed and see the tiger engaging in fine dining one more time.

Some great pix there Navi, one can literally spend hours on that site and not get bored! Thanks for sharing
OT, (mentioning it since the phrase came up) I quite enjoyed the BBC mini-series "Jewel in the Crown"... as did I the American mini-series "Winds of War", both are from about the same time frame (1980's).
Cheers!
