In a rare incident, three Naga youth Sunday fished out an unusual giant cat-fish weighting approximately 65½ kilograms and 6½ feet long from Dhansiri River, Thilixu block III.

Talking to Nagaland Post, Hokivi Swu, Tovito Shohe and Kahuto Achumi said they were “blindly” fishing at Dhansiri River, armed with fishing equipments at a site rumored to be located in an “ill-fated” area.

The trio used battery operated customized gadget, generally used by local fishermen. Swu said they were utterly surprised when they discovered the giant cat fish. Seeing the enormously hefty fish, Swu said they shouted for help as they could not take it out of the water immediately.

Hearing their call for help, around ten villagers rushed to the spot and helped them fish out the unusual looking cat fish.
According to one fisherman, Lepden Ao said the gadget fishermen normally use is known as “coil machine”, functions with the battery of Gypsy, Maruti Van or even auto-rickshaw with the intensity raging from “40-100 power”.

Such grand size deserved to stay alive. Wish they had released it after weighing and taking pictures. The Catfish can survive for a long time out of the water, I have heard. Just a thought.

I agree with Marksman...

PS : But would like to have a little more info on that zapper technology using car batteries...

"battery operated customized gadget"

That has got to be one of the most miserable technical descriptions that I have ever heard from a news reporter. Nagarifle, do you what the H-E double hockey sticks he is talking about?

I guess that this coil machine is an improvised winch and this refers to winching it out of the water. It will be interesting to get to know the facts.

Naga/Jonah/CC should be able to decipher it for us. Unfortunately, meat hunts do not allow catch and release ethics. I do wish that the fish was let go to fight another day.

I thought that too, Rajat. I thought it might be a variable speed winch but then I thought everyone knows what a winch is. One would think the guy would call it a winch if that is what it was. So I re-read the article and then I thought maybe they are using an electrical coil to shock the fish in some way.
Who knows? Hard to tell from the description. You would think that someone whose job it was to describe things would be able to. Your average newspaperman is an idiot and doesn't care if anyone knows it.

Now that's a fish! No winch involved. They wouldn't have needed to call for help. "Electro fishing". Used to be quite popular with fish poachers in regions of the US. Works as well, or better, and is quieter than a "DuPont spinner".
A similar set-up is used by fisheries biologists for sampling.

Some one is set for the winter. :D Dried fish is good.
Throw it back? Heck no. It is believed that Goonch are efficient predators and do attack human beings. I think these fishermen are doing a service to the surrounding villages especially the children there. I think catch and release for less agressive fishes like carp, bass or golden masheer works but goonch have terrible reputation especially as it gets way bigger than children ( ref. kali river killer catfish river monsters s01ep02 ).
I hope the area will no longer be "ill fated" after this catch. Anyway great share.
Can someone please describe how electroshock fishing works? I have heard of unconventional techniques like bombing, using certain plants etc. But batteries are a first.

The fisheries biologists around here have (or used to have as I saw this used over 15 years ago) an electric generator powered by a gasoline engine and hooked to two grids that are kept about 10 feet apart and the boat would slowly troll through the water and the stunned fish would float to the surface but would recover in about 5-10 minutes.

In regards to a "coil machine" I would suspect they are using an automobile ignition coil and battery.

Its no doubt Goonch..the method to fish it out is questionable...In lots of places ppl use illegal means to fish.. sometimes even explosives.. people need to be educated about harm these methods are doing to already fragile eco systems. Its not far when the animal right activists will throw towel and cry for fishing ban citing these methods.

its a simple car battery or such like, with jump start cables attached to battery and two poles and a switch. its back packed (or a geni can be used from the land with long cables) noting fancy or tecki stuff.
