The King of Games-Polo

All these days I was waiting for Safarigent to start a thread on Polo. Since he was busy "airborne" I take the liberty (guztaakhi) of starting the post myself. Hope he will contribute to it as and when he gets the time.
I am NOT a player of the game, but being a horse lover, have a keen interest in it.
Polo is probably the fastest field game.It has the largest field. It is also one of the oldest team sport in the world. It's origins can be traced back to more than 2500 years ago. The exact date and place of origin is not known. Though it has been played all over Asia from Persia to China including India.

"Let other people play at other things. The king of games is still the game of Kings."

When cavalry was an important part in the battle field . The horsemen spent their peace time , playing the game to better their riding skills. It is believed that the ancient game consisted of as many as a 100 horsemen a side. What a sight it must have been. Almost a mock battle .
Qutubuddin Aibakh who built the Qutub Minar in Delhi died while playing the game. He was the founded of the slave dynasty and ruled for about 4 years.
The game has evolved ever since.
The first Polo Club was started in Silchar .
The second oldest was the Calcutta Polo Club. The Calcutta Polo Club is presently the oldest Polo club still in existance.
I was honoured to have Safarigent over for my Wildlife photo exhibition. He was one of the few guys who attended it. :)
Next morning we decided to ride together. I wake up late (7a.m.) so I asked him to give me a wake up call.
Sure enough I got a call at 5 a.m. Like an enthusiastic little kid I was up and ready in an hour.

{As a child I would hate getting up early in the morning. They say if your kid doesn't get up early put him on a horse. That's what my father did.Sure enough (at 5 yrs) I fell in love with horses at first sight.}

We met up at the riding club. I am almost twice Safarigent's age . So I insisted I get a decent horse to start with. The last I had sat on a horse was in Argentina more than 6 months ago. Grossly overweight and not in the best of my physical condition , I found myself tired after a few rounds of the field.
Safarigent on the other hand was as fit as ever and wanted to ride on even after an hour on horseback. Finally it was time to go. We took a round of the stables and before leaving Safarigent tried his hand with the mallet. His shots were neat and well struck. It was a short demo. for the young Polo players standing nearby.
We were also told that there was a cobra which lived close to the stables. Our "Shambhu shikari" (just back from his African hunt) was ready to go after the snake . He asked me to be ready with the camera as he would flush out the snake from his hide out with the Polo stick. I asked him not to disturb the snake .
Interestingly this cobra was more than 11 feet long. He had never bitten a human or a horse. There were enough rats in the barn. The rats were feeding on the gram (chana) which was kept for the horses. The cobra was putting a check on the rat population. Everyone was living in peace and harmony.

Katana.
You are absolutely right. This is the I.M.A.
I was riding regularly till last summer. Then one fine day I developed a low back ache. Had to discontinue thereafter.
Inder.
There are few things in the world which match up to the speed and power of a stallion. Horses are indeed beautiful animals. The last snap is dedicated to you.
Capt. Saab.
Interestingly I was Safarigent's guest . He was put up in the Academy. Safarigent has a lovely pair of Jodhpur breeches with him which gave way at the wrong time. He wore his jeans instead. No wonder the cowboys always wear them. They are tough and perfect for riding.
The black horse you see is the 16 yrs old "Shahjada". One of the Asian games participants.

Nice.. well Safarigent is getting a request from me soon. This post is sure going to make my father's interest rekindled in the forum and bring him back some fond memories. He participated in Asiad equestrians and was part of the Polo team in his days.

Looking at your pics I tried recalling the stables. The eucalyptus trees don't crop up in my memory :) , but the stables seem to be the same, except they were white washed not 'geru' painted. The riding complex was quite near the main gate to IMA, somewhere to the right, although my favorite riding was going cross country ('crossy' as we called it) in the tea estate behind the IMA.

A lot of the cadets, in fact hated to be on a horse and they would do anything to 'jam' (slang for avoiding) the evening sessions. I remember an instructor, an NCO from the Paras by the name of Shekhawat, give them hell!

thats a lovely write up sir.
i am done with the hunt posts, will contribute here now.
by the way, notice the tack is different on both the horses.
while my horse has a GP saddle, with english tack, prashant sirs charger has indian cavalry tack and an indian cavalry saddle! rare these days and i am glad he got to experience it.
Interestingly, there was yet another NCO, but from the PBG, a sikh gentleman, incharge of the horses there. He sure as hell was giving them hell!!! The gent standing between us was Havildar B.S. Rathore, from the Indian Armys's 61st Cavalry, assisting us with our riding.
Shahzada, the panchkalyani stallion is a retired horse of Lt. Col Rajesh Pattu, a upstanding officer who has done the country proud on horseback and off it. This horse, you see, has won commonwealth and asian medals and at the peak of his career, had been trained to jump over a single cavalry sabre fixed to the ground!!!!! Col Pattu, is also a survivor of the Uphaar tragedy, his action and courage in that inferno earned him the SJRP. the sarva jeevan raksha padak!

Always learn something new.
Here's a snap of the stables where most of the horses are kept.

Yiu know what Safarigent. We were wondering about the colour of that horse.
I saw an old Moghal painting with one of the Moghal princes riding a similar(colour) horse.

Sadly, no. I missed my chance of serving in the defense forces. Although I wanted to join the Navy. I did sit for my NDA entrance exam and cleared it.

My connection with the IMA is through riding. It so happened that I studied close to the IMA in Dehra Dun and was not really interested in the games played at school like cricket, soccer etc. I did try my hand at boxing, basketball and archery (the present Chairman of the NRAI was our Archery Captain  ) though.

Anyway I spoke to my father about this, who in turn to spoke to Lt. Gen. A.M. Sethna, now deceased and a friend of his. Gen. Sethna was at that time President of the Equestrian Federation of India and a past Commandant of the IMA. Matters were settled with the Headmaster and that was that. So I would cycle down to IMA from school 4-5 evenings a week and ride to my hearts content.

The 'panchkalyani' is a type of marking on Marwari and Sindhi breeds wherein all 4 hocks are white and so is the forehead. The English terminology is 'piebald' but also encompasses 'ablak' horses. A panchkalyani mare is considered auspicious among Rajputs and is worshipped ritually twice a year, once on Akshay Tritiya and then on Vijaya Dashmi. A panchkalyani is said to bring fortune on its owner.

Aah thanks Doc, I use to be a regular at Punjab’s animal fairs in my biking days and having seen a Panchkalyani Marwari stallion close up, I can safely say that there is no good looking creature on mother earth than a well fed and well exercised horse.

Sorry to hijack your thread but here are some horsee pics from PPS Nabha, a school that is still keeping the warrior ways alive. Pics are from a friend who is an alumnus of PPS
