Indians For Guns

here is a list of all that i took with me on my hunt.
i put this up here so that others who are new and go have a ready reckoner to refer to.
it of course is by no means complete or exhaustive and i would like the other members to add to it too.


1. Trousers: 3 nos woolen, baggy, dark green, patches on knees and the rear.
2. Shirts: 4 nos angora, full sleeved, non reflective buttons, patch on right shoulder.
3. Socks: 8 nos army type, woolen
4. Hat: 1 nos, terai type, soft felt, so that it doesnt make a noise if it catches on a thorny branch and slightly water resistant
5. scarf: 1 nos, netted, camoflague, to be used around neck or to cover face or as a towel.
6. boots: 2 nos, trekking type quechua. army surplus jungle boots. you want a replacement if one pair gets wet.
7. laces: 2 extra pairs, spare and for sundry random use.
8. personal kit. beware of using deodorants, aftershaves, lotions or anything which might betray your presence in the field.
9.first aid kit. do carry crepe bandages, deetol etc to effect rudimentary field care and dressing. my Ph had a set in his car too.
10. phone and charger.
11. adaptor.
12. camera and charger.
13. camoflague jacket heavy cloth, with removable inner lining which can also be worn seperately if so required.
14. organic shoe deodoriser blocks, you dont want the animal to smell your smelly shoes.
15. a hunt diary.
16. good pen.
17. i didnt carry this but very important: beanie cap to protect your head against the cold.
18. gloves. same reason as above. you have to be able to operate your gun with them so choose the thickness carefully.
19. sun glasses to protect against the glare and wind in the truck. didnt use them in the field for fear of their shine.
20. swiss army knife.
21. a bigger knife on my belt.
22. a belt too.
23. shooting vest camo. incase it is too hot for a jacket. didnt use it at all.
24. handkerchiefs: 6 nos.
25. bear grylls survival kit. i didnt even use it. i brought it because its so darn cool
26. personal clothes, kit and foot wear.
27. torch.
28. ballistics chart for my weapon.
29. shot placement pictures, to be studied.
30. gifts for the staff and newfound friends.
31. plastic pouches for used clothes.
32. condoms, useful for waterproofing stuff, put your camera in it, your phone, wallet, if you are caught in a downpour or have to get wet like crossing a deep stream. works like a charm. thats about all
you should use one for in SA.

1. 2 . 3. 4. 6.10.12.13.26. is all I carried. Rest (except 32) were provided by the ph.
Just remembered. Charging a phone or a camera was a problem. All the plugs in the hunting lodge had power points and I did not have an adapter (11). Good point AB.
I prefer to travel light but you are right ,it is always better to carry some extra things just in case one needs them.

the basic need is one set of tropical day clothing two sets of underwear and DJ for evening feast. the rest is the irresponsibility of the coolies.

naga, wouldnt you want to change that to dog for evening feast!!!
i once saw a demo of a FL wherin they filled it up with 15 litres of water so yes, they can stretch and they are pretty damn good at keeping the moisture out.
dr singh: as this was my first time, i decided to be on the safer side and carry some extra weight. it helped that i was travelling by jet and wasnt charged extra for excess baggage.
next time i will be travelling a lot lighter because i reckon one has gone for hunting, not to sit and take care of your various and teeming personal belongings!!

its a good basic list for first timers, [32]with few comforts included which can be shorted or long lenght to suit different size and at the same time keep one safe.

some one is in a damn fine mood!!!

Some detail on the different aspects of importing and exporting firearms for Hunting or sporting purposes outside of India covering the Airline as well as Legal side would be good. If you could start a fresh topic in the Legal section under import export it would be helpful all potential Safari hunters .

thank you sir for compiling this list. The other day i was watching man vs. wild where bear grylls falls sick.I would like to know if there is some precautionary medicine you carry along with yourself for such trips. hope i'm not sounding foolish here.

I didn't take a gun with me because i don't own one in my name and the hassles of taking one out is not worth it. not at this time atleast.
i carried a first aid kit as i mentioned in my list.
a small, compact first aid kit that i made and took with me:
diclofenac tablets and gel
paracetamol
burnol
disprin
anti vomitting tablets.
anti allergen medicine.
medicine for the loosies.
band aids.
dettol.
coton bandages.
crepe bandages.
thermometer.
sterilized gauze.
forceps.
i took only four tablets each, the goal being to administer basic care immediately, till such time as things got better or civilization was reached.
the rest was all one each, except 4 cotton bandages and two sterilized gauzes, for any unforeseen GSW.
