Chimney Starter for BBQ grill

Hello Folks!
I always had a tough time getting the coals in the tandoor/bbq grill red hot. About two weeks ago, me and Inder (kanwar76) were at a shop selling BBQ grills and accessories. Inder showed me a chimney starter and how simple it was to get the coals burning. The price tag seemed high, so i decided to make one!

Herewith pics of what I made-

For those who don't know how it works, the underside (below the spokes) is stuffed with newspaper or any other material that burns easily and coal is put down the top end. The burning newspaper gets the coal red hot which may then be used in the bbq grill.

Regards
Pran

Interesting . Can't see any holes for cross ventilation.

Hello Doc,
I rest it on two clay bricks, gives it enough air to burn :)

Did u see the one made by Weber with the high price tag? I have a Weber BBQ grill and planning to buy tht chimney starter, but this one has given new idea....

On second note, you dont need to stuff news papers in the bottom half, just fill coal at the top and put this on top of a LPG burner. Within seconds you will have red hot coals.

That's the one I saw :)

Works really well on a gas stove. While outdoors anything that catches fire fast will do.

LOL so you made one, now be a good boy and get one for me also

Its the best thing, take pain out of BBQ cooking. Make some holes below the spokes, will work way better.

Sure thing mate. You'll have to invite me and NORT to a BBQ night at your place :)

Or you can add some legs to this design. Then you won't need the bricks.
I am planning to make one for myself.
Thanks Pran.

Awsome job. I have the webber and now feel like kicking myself. Why did I not build one myself?? I guess u can use a metal bucket to the same effect with some modification. Anyways the webber one works great too. Another tipp, don't go and buy the fancy webber glove. Go to any good hardware or tool store and ask for heat proof gloves. I got a nice pair for under Rs.100/- and they are great. The webber glove I bought caught fire once!! :D
