lack of predators

Post by dr.jayakumar » Tue Jul 12, 2011 9:48 am

hi friends,
this isn't new..i feel there is a shortage of predators like jackals ,leapords, wild dogs, which leads to over population of wild boars and bluebulls.can anything be done to balance this?

That would cause more problem if you release leopards or wild dogs there, the availability of food will make their population higher which will cause another problem. I think the right way to control the wild boar and bluebulls is controlled hunting (No poaching). I also think government should declare monkeys as varmints just like what USA did to coyotes. Monkeys are more annoying than coyotes as they can open doors and get inside house and do some serious damage, in fact here we can't cultivate anything except rice due to the monkeys so vegetable prices on rise here. I'm no animal hater or anti-PETA but I'd love to put a few buckshots into monkeys just for the nature's sake.

I agree with you priyan.if we release predators like tigers and lion they will more likely to hunt livestock and humans because these are more easier to hunt. The main fear of a predator is injury so they like to hunt easy pray.If you record kills of lions and tigers in the wild you will see only 2 or 3 out of 10 kills are of Nilgai. So the easiest way to control the overpopulation of Nilgai and wild boar is control hunting like in usa and other countries.

Monkey menace is on the rise due to the felling of trees which in turn is due to the consumer nature of the populatin.

however being pragmatic, the population may be controlled by shooting them. Dunno if that will be "for natures sake" though.

Herd control and hunting are slightly different and have different rules. Some like one some the other and some like both.

In terms of wild boar, it is very difficult to control their population as their reproduction rate is phenomenal and they can cross breed with domestic pigs too.

I agree. If you look at it globally, pretty much the only thing that works is managed hunting with people paying for the privilege to do so.

But it's no longer treta yug and I'm so pissed at them that if I had a gun I'd go on rampage shooting monkeys, I'm sure nobody will care about it here because as a matter of fact a monkey got stuck in the local transformer and it short circuited. Now we are living in complete blackout for 2 days (I'm typing it on UPS charge) BTW the lack of trees causing monkeys to come out into residential areas is not true we got enough jungle and trees here but they still breaks into house for easy food. I guess they are adopting themselves into modern world.

Monkey problem is not due to lack of forests we have enough for them.Monkeys have adapted the city life. You see every time monkeys come back to cities whenever they driven to the forest. On the other hand langur never create a problem because they use to live in forests.Monkeys in cities got everything protection, good food etc.But in forest they have fear of being hunted by predators and also lack of good food.SO I THINK HUNTING IS RIGHT OPTION FOR MONKEYS

Monkeys have become bold in most cities. In fact one walked into a cousin's house, opened the refigerator door and helped himself to an egg and a loaf of bread. He then continued to eat the egg, calmly dipping the bread in it just like we would. No one in the family moved, as they are terrified of being chased by them.
The RWA then got a langur, but he was kinda sleepy and a monkey actually walked across and slapped him.
So monkeys are still 1vs RWA 0. ROTFL

Priyan,

While your vexation with monkey problems is understandable, expressing it the way you did will not do anyone any favours, especially to responsible gun owners. You do write articulately. So,please do give a moment's thought to what you are writing.Shooting monkeys even if you have a gun would result in you being in jail and plenty ammo for the antis.

Dev, That is a funny story if one reads it from a distance than being a witness. ROTFL

I grew up in places where there were plenty monkeys ,some very troublesome. On the other hand, they virtually disappeared in quite a few places. One reason I hear is for illegal testing in labs by cosmetics and medical companies.I do not like monkeys giving trouble to people. But,I do not like subjecting them to the torture of illegal testing.

Sorry Dr.Jayakumar for hijacking your thread.

Priyan,

Just feed a pack of stray puppies for a while. Once they make your house their territory, the monkeys won't come near. If you wanna get exotic then get a rottweiler (sp?) or two. be careful about what you write on a public forum, even the cops like reading what we write and they may just decide to act.

i agree with Dev. even if shooting is allowed you cant shoot all the monkeys in the cities, the conflict will not end by shooting them. get youeself a dog instead..
