Abu Garcia 557

Post by Yaj » Thu Feb 15, 2007 7:43 pm

I bought this reel a few years back.It says Abu Garcia 557 but I cant find any info on this particular model on the net.
It says ultra cast design and size 7 and 17lbs-340 yds with 25 lbs-230 yds Made in Korea.
Can anybody tell me whether it is any good and what kind of fishing it would mainly be used for ?

HI Yaj,
Where's the rod?
you seem to have a decent reel-Abu is a well known name, dont know about the Korean origin.Abu originally designed and made in Sweden...thought China makes most of the branded and non branded stuff...
We'll wait for Mack The Knife's advice on this
Depends on the line loaded-Maxm is 230Yds of 25 lbs breaking strength line.
Get your self a 7-8 foot spinning rod of similar rating.
You need to load it up with 15-20lb line and- lets go fishing!

Never heard off it.

Line capacity seems to be decent.

Before you load any line, what sort of fishing do you do - Powai lake, beach or offshore?

Could you post another pic alongside a known object, for instance a pack of fags, to get an idea of scale?

Hello Asif, the rod was bought with the reel.It is a chinese made telescopic rod, fibreglass I think, got "DPH Powerstick 360" written on it, length: 3.6 m section: 7 casting weight 15-30 gms.The guides look like they are ceramic.
Got a few reels of monofilament line (green) of assorted strength Brazilian made.
As for fishing ,I'm always ready . Desperately need some hands on experience.

Tried my hand at a few rivers near Mumbai. No luck yet  .Spotted a likely spot on the river where I take my dogs for a swim and run every Sunday.
The high water line is riddled with crab burrows and there are plenty of algae eaters and loaches around the banks.Been told the locals catch quite a few fish on that river, trying to find out more :species bait etc.

Will post pics of the river later .here are the pics of the rod and the reel.
Dont smoke so an empty beer bottle used  for scale.

A man should have a hobby. It keeps him out of trouble.
