Elephant declared national heritage animal

Now, I am worried about the Elephant.

Source: Times Of India

The environment ministry Friday declared the elephant a national heritage animal in order to step up measures for its protection.

The ministry Friday issued a notification in this regard after the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) approved the proposal in its meeting held Oct 13.

The Elephant Task Force Aug 31 in its report had recommended the special status to elephants, saying the move will help in protecting the jumbos.

Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh during the release of the report had said that elephants have been "part of our heritage since ages" and there is need to give the same degree of importance to them as given to the tiger in order to protect the big animal. (And that is what worries me)

The report by the 12-member committee also called for setting up of a statutory agency National Elephant Conservation Authority (NECA) on the lines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) with a substantial enhancement in the budgetary outlay.

There are about 25,000 elephants in the country with about 3,500 in captivity. India is home to 60 percent of elephants in Asia.

India started Project Elephant in 1992 to provide financial and technical support to the elephant range states in India for the protection of jumbos, their habitat and corridors and address issues of human-animal conflict.

Regards

I am one BIG fan of Jairam Ramesh. He is one "neta" who makes sense . Hats Off to this gentleman.

But why only the "elephant" as a national heritage animal.
TODAY ...ALL animals in the Indian jungle are equally precious .
From the Barking Deer (kaakar) and the Hog Deer (paara) to the Sambhar,Neelgai and the wildboar.
Each and every one is as important to maintain the "Ecological Balance".....and if we wish to save the most beatiful of them all "The Royal Bengal Tiger" we have got to save them all.

By the way half the animals the tigers (living in the buffer zone of our national parks) feed on are domestic animals and not Wild Game. A sad state of affairs where Man- Animal conflict is expected to come up.
A much larger number of our Asiatic Lions living in Gir feed on domestic cows and buffalos . Else the dry jungles of Gir can just not support a population of more than 300 lions.

Question:
National Heritage Animals are being run over by trains in West Bengal ,Rajaji N.P or where ever the poor creatures and trains move
Elephants are quite intelligent. I am wondering if there is not a fairly simple solution to this problem.

In the USA, elimination of predators has caused the deer population to boom in many areas. The result is that many deer are hit by auto and truck traffic on the roads and highways.

"Deer whistles" are one means people have used to try and scare away the deer:

Some claim that these whistles don't work:

But my own experience seems to indicate that they may work -- I've used them in deer country and they do seem to have some, but not perfect, warning capability for deer.

Some have tried to study the effect of such whistles:

http://www.deercrash.com/Toolbox/CMToolboxWhistles.pdf

Regarding the study, it would seem to me that it wouldn't require a lot of research to identify what sorts of warnings could be effective for both elephant and deer in these kinds of situations. Given the conservation and simple property damage issues involved, I wonder why such research cannot be undertaken?

Dear Sir,
But sir, If you have seen today's morning news NDTV they people have shown that,In a tea estate which belongs to Duncan, A few year old elephant who was left behind by the group of wild elephant who passes by that estate every year.
But the dalima start here the people of near by village and the employee if the company start throwing stone at the elephant in presence of forest officials.
I have read some of the article written in national geographic mag. that elephant are falling short of space so we have to give them some more rooms to live if we want to have better harmony with this giant creature.

Timmy,in the US their is regard for life and that means any form of life,( I was reading an article in which a team of detactives investigated a hit and run for 16 months and then found the guilty, and the irony was that the acccsed was an Indian, here if you arnt the V V I P you wont be able to report a crime), Elephants may be very intelligent animals, but our train drivers are speeding through the Wildlife resevers without any regard for life as such.At night Elephants get dazzled by the headlights of the trains and get mown down, the ministry has not been able to convice the Railways as to reduce the speed of trains at night through Wildlife reserves, elephants make news, the lesser wildlife dont even make it to the headlines,Tigers have been lost to trains/fast moving trucks, etc, etc.Regarding your writeup on the deer whistle,Timmy all i can say is :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: ,this would be the ans one would get form the concerned authorities.
I live very near a Wildlife santuary and see my share of Deer,Nilgai,Barasingha,Axix Deer, etc, etc, on the road side after being, dead, after being mowed down by fast moving trucks and other vehicles every year. These are the ones which are not seen at night by people, there are countless others which are picked up and butchered.Wildlife guys come,do the paperwork and cremate them,or so they say--------
The dilema as mentioned by ABHRANKASH is as stated above, here every wrong is done under the watch of the ward and watch staff.
WHO IS GONNA POLICE THE POLICE.
Abhrankash i didnt get your comment, regarding the little elephant left behind, elephants dont leave the young ones behind unless there is some kind of threat to the groups life and even then they do come back and normally wreak some kind of havoc on the people there. So untill and unless NDTV was there at the time when the little one was left behind, they would be relaying what has been told to them and i really wont give a lot of thought to that.

Dear,Amit Sir,

The elephant which was left behind was nearly one to two and1/2 year old the NDTV people has show the video on their news channel if you want to see this it might be one you tube so you can see this.
And as far as my knowledge is concern about wild life, Elephants have a very strong family bond and they are controlled by infra-sonic sound produced by the each elephants in the group which is different from each other it is something like finger print.(this infra-sonic voice can be heard by elephants even 10-15km away) I mean they can communicate with each other.

How that elephant was left behind that's the question?
But what to do they have shown the video how the people are throwing stones and the elephant was being made ran from here and their to save its life

Please forward the video to the Forest Minister and Mr Jairam,so that action can be taken against the authorities who were there at the spot,i again spell out the irony of the whole senario here,2 { Two] leopards not maneater were shot dead by the police in Haryana in front of a cpl of news channels, the only fault of the leopards was that they got lost while trying to get from one jungle to another,so SLRs,9mm and 38 specials were used on them {a few cops and other people were also injured in the cross fire, only one cop was mauled by the leopard}.Now after a lot of pressure and and letter to Mr jairam cases have been registered against the cops,in a cpl of months they will be scotfree.Mera Bharat Mahen
