I just heard the news about a Tiger sighted in Mathura which even attacked and injured few folks, hopefully he has happy endings and no one is seriously injured including the Tiger. The news flash had police chaps with rifles not sure if they are trying to capture it alive.

Members from that place can better advise..

Authorities in Mathura district were taken by surprise when a tiger attacked four people in the fields of Fatiha village, on the Agra-Mathura highway, on Monday morning. While two people suffered minor injuries, two others had to be hospitalised but are out of danger.

The incident on Monday took place when farmers Rohan (40) and Laxman (15) went to the fields. The tiger which was hiding there, attacked them. Hearing their cries for help, two others, Sanju and Rajupal, ran towards the field, and the animal attacked them too.

The villagers immediately informed the police which, in turn, informed the Forest officials.

According to Forest officials, this is the first time a tiger has been spotted in this area. There is no tiger habitat nearby and the closest one is the Rajasthan’s Ranthambore Tiger Reserve which is over 150 km away. The officials suspect the animal had strayed out of Ranthambore and then lost its way.

Deforestation and encroachment of land in an overpopulated country like ours , is pushing wild animals out of their natural habitat.
I hope they catch this one alive.

Yes, the only concern is they manage to capture it alive and unhurt seriously, before declaring it a man eater and shooting it down.

If it has injured a few people, they most probably shoot it.

I agree

They are not supposed to shoot a tiger who has just injured a few people.. And they cant declare it a maneater unless they have some evidence that this animal has killed and eaten someone.. But nothing for just mauling a few people and most probably the incident was accidental. At present when there is such a hue and cry about the declining number of wild tigers any animal found in such circumstance is preferably caught and shifted back deep inside a jungle.. Or if is a proven maneater then caught and kept in a zoo..

These creatures are our heritage,hope they capture it alive.

I for one am not sure that it was a tiger. In all probability it could be a leopard. has the sighting been authenticated by the forest dept.

One of the newspapers did show that it was a young tiger. The wounds have been stated to be defensive ones, a theory derived from its mainly paw attacks. I am just quoting what I read in the newspapers mainly the TOI.

Hi guys..
Latest on this what i read in a news paper is that this Tiger is 'Mohan' From Buffer zone of Ranthambhore NP and has starayed away from the park. From last 2 months he has gone missing Forest officials says... They have come to this conclusion after examining his Pug marks... Now Ranthambhore is 148 Kms from his current location.Now Ranthambhore has a very fringe buffer zone and area outside is surrounded by open land and villages, This tiger walked through whatever forest cover he got from Ranthambhore to chambal belt and from there to his present location..
They are tracing him to tranqulize and again shift him back to park which already has a tiger population of 40.

The discovery of the pug marks in Madhya Pradesh has forced authorities to think that the tiger spotted in Mathura was not Mohan' as believed earlier. Mohan has strayed away from Ranthambore about six months back.

"What seems now is that a second tiger had strayed away from Ranthambore sanctuary through Ganteshwarkho to Kailadevi to Band Baretha in Bharatpur and then to Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. This could be the tiger that had attacked ranger Daulat Singh Shaktawat on August 20 on the periphery of Ranthambore. After the attack, no effort was made to reign it in the sanctuary. This tiger, after migrating to Bharatpur may have sneaked into Mathura, travelling through the dense Bajra fields. But there is no certainty on this unless we get a picture of the tiger at Bharatpur," said Rajpal Singh, member, state wildlife board.

To end the confusion, forest officials have now fixed camera traps in and around Bharatpur where the carcass was discovered. "We have pictures of all the tigers in Ranthambore. Only after getting a picture of the tiger in Bharatpur through the trap camera that will we will be certain if this is Mohan or the one that was present near the Mathura refinery was or if it is a third tiger on the prowl," he added.
