Proposed angling ban in Karnataka
‘Angling can’t be permitted in State’
Bangalore, August 3, DHNS:
The State Government on Monday submitted to the Karnataka High Court that angling is prohibited under law and no such activity can be permitted in Karnataka.
The State made this submission when the court was hearing petitions by Bush Betta Wildlife Resort Ltd, which has sought directions to the State Forest Department to execute the lease deed.
The State in its submission said that angling of fish (fishing mahseer) and releasing them back into the river after weighing them is banned.
The resort had challenged the failure of the State and the Central Empowered Committee in renewing the lease for its resort and angling camp on the Cauvery.
It said in 1997, the State gave permission to operate fishing and angling camp from Mekedatu to Tamil Nadu border across the Cauvery. However, the permission was not renewed. The matter has been adjourned.

The lawmakers are insane and liberty is at stake. They want to ban all sporting and outdoor acitvities and change the way of life as we know it. Oppose it...lets unite and fight for our rights and liberty

As per the latest update this ban is valid only within protected areas like National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries. It does not apply to angling outside of these protected areas.

Oh thanks for that update GG, at least in the protected areas the fish were released back into the waters but outside who knows if everybody will follow that rule, also i dont see how this can control poaching.

The imbecility of the lawmakers is a frustrating affair. Most probably the genuine sanctuary for the masheer and other aquatic fauna is protected more in these angling spots than elsewhere. I sincerely hope the ruling is successfully challenged.

I agree, also it was drawing in some good foreign revenue.
Any idea if anyone has actually challenged this order or initiated a petition on this.

So you cant fish within the sanctuary, but you can do so outside it? 'Myopic Babus' is all that comes to my mind.

The problem lies with the quality of bureaucrats, and if I dare say judges, we have in our country. They have absolutely no idea about administration as a whole. They have never administered before, nor have they lived in that particular area. How can we even expect them to come to sound judgements?
I doubt if the man revoking the said permission would have even known what angling is all about before he was put on the chair to take such a decision. Or for that matter if he would even know the eco-geological set up in the concerned area.

Justice alone is the mainstay of government and the source of prosperity to the governed, injustice is the most pernicious of things; it saps the foundations of the government and brings ruin upon the realm - Sher Shah Sur, Sultan-ul-Adil.
