I don't know whether to  or be  !!! As if the Chinese were not enough, bloody Indian tantriks are also after the tigers.

Tiger conservation in Madhya Pradesh is suffering at the hands of its protectors. From speeding forest jeeps to guards believing in the occult, tigers continue to succumb at the hands of those who swear to shelter them.

Three forest chowkidars of Pench National Park in Chhindwara district were arrested last week after a six-month-old female cub was found dead with its paws sawed off. Investigation revealed the chowkidars in collusion with the president of a local environmental committee had supplied four tiger paws to a 'tantrik' for an exclusive puja.

The cub was last spotted with her mother on June 9. Two weeks later, the forest department found its burnt carcass without its paws. Nine people have been arrested in this connection.

Earlier, on the morning of May 19, tourists found an eight-year-old tigress and mother of three cubs badly injured and gasping for breath at Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Umaria district. The forest department identified her as Jhurjhura. She died a few hours later. The postmortem report stated she died of haemorrhage and internal injuries caused by a vehicle hit.

Jhurjhura's death became sensational with allegations that the jeep which hit her belonged to a resort owned by a cabinet minister in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government. The forest department suspended three officials for negligence but failed to track down the vehicle or the persons travelling in it.

Really Sad!! Never mind whether they are chowkidars, ranges, forest offices --> All are corrupt brains and who don't know what a life is worth, be it animal or human. They must be killed, in my view.
The forest department suspended three officials for negligence but failed to track down the vehicle or the persons travelling in it.
Little tweek -- Department chose not to track the vehicle down.

There is a view among some biologists that all species including man have a time span. Nature has allotted so much time for so much species. And that maybe the depleting nos. of the endangered species is a result of that.

I don't know how true it is because I don't see any scientific study to support that view.

Any of the members have any idea about the above-mentioned view??

I have read a bit about the theory. Dont want to go into details (OT from the topic).

The scientific studies study fossil records buit many dont agree with it as it is just fossils and many gaps that go with fossil evidence.

I have seen religious fanatics discount evolution as a theory because the only evidence are fossils. (yeah right, how do we show live dinasaurs, homo erectus etc).

I feel sad because lot of poachers/anti conservationists, non environmentalists etc use it as an excuse to carry on in their ways.

This is a fatalist attitude in the same lines as "we all have to die some day so why bother with medical science".

There are more Tigers in captivity now than in the wild. I have been lucky enough to see one, and sad enough to watch the species into extinction. So long tiger.. thank you for all the fish.

A bbc documentary interviewed the officer who first reported that Panna was devoid of tigers.
At first he was discouraged but when he persisted about reporting it, he was suspended.

Exclusive puja my foot. Unless some exclusive punishment is pronounced on this exclusive bunch , this practice is going to go on. And as for the cabinet minister, forget it. Even if there was a video coverage to prove it, nothing’s going to happen. If any one has watched the comedy film “History of the world” remember the French king who would do some nonsense and then look at the camera and say, “it good to be King” in the context that there was no one to question his act. Same way goes for the babus. Nice however to see that we in this community hold in disgust what’s being done to our heritage.

I seem to remember a similar incident a few years back at the zoo in Hyderabad . A 6 month old Tigress was skinned on the premises for a Tantric ritual. As usual lots of finger pointing but no action - and quite a few fingers seemed to point towards Madame J J.

The cub seemed to have been skinned in the presence of its sibling who subsequently displayed lot of trauma & stress.

@ MoA - Excellent DA reference ! Very apt !

The Conservation of tiger is a serious matter. Even though the tiger has large presence in India apart from Asia and other places, the responsibility of conservation of Tiger in India should be an International Effort.

India alone cannot do anything about preservation and this task should be entrusted to an "Allied Effort". The officers, villagers, people who are entrusted with protecting the tiger need to be put under watch by an "Allied Team".

A few weeks back government was considering banning tiger tourism. Sure this may have good consequences in a foreign country, but imagine a forest where no one is allowed to go in, Poachers will make this a heaven and wipe out tigers in 5 years max.

The lunatics are at it again
The lunatics are at it again.
The tiger roars in pain
The lunatics stand and laugh.
And each day the paper boy brings more
Mutilated, skinned and sawn off paws
Every day I shake my head
Every day I hold my head
And ponder at the futility of it all

The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
I caress my gun and wait for the dark.
My cross hairs settle on their heads
Ho ho ho ho, heh heh heh heh....

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no more tiger upon the hill
Then if your head explodes with dark forbodings too
I'll pull the trigger and see you on the dark side of the moon
