Can't say Iam bursting with ideas but strongly feel that more than policing it is public education that is the most important tool in eradicating the evils of society. We have such a strong medium in the form of the television for this purpose. We have seen the difference it has made in our knowledge and attitude towards AIDS, Swine flu, alcohol and drug addictions and so on. These maladies have not ended but their scourge has mitigated with knowledge and they have continued unabated where the education was lacking. We have made initial attempts at RKBA on these lines with some gains surely.
Policing comes next and here I must say that you cannot expect someone to play to win 1 lac when he has been assured 2 lac to loose. Can't say more than that. We have to look after our forces. The feeling of pride and exclusivity does wonders to a man and the absence of it is damaging in the same measure. The home and hearth scheme that the govt adopted in J&K can work here. Local people are offered jobs to defend small local areas. They are those who do not have an occupation that takes them away from their homes. They work in small groups and often their only contribution is keeping a watchful eye and reporting. An effective deterrent with limited liabilities. Being from the same kith they vie with each other in displaying skills and are far from disloyal.
Third is the legal action which cannot be allowed to go on forever in the name of transparency. There is little we can do here.

Thanks for commenting on the existing sad commentary on dwindling wildlife. I agree with you, that education is the key to diverting peole from poaching activities. With all due respects, by the time you begin educating these tribals, the tigers and rhinos would all have dissapeared. But if we do combine all three - Policing, serving as a deterrent, then educating followed by (as you very correctly pointed out) hearth and home policy, we would be able to control the most detructive element, mainly poaching immediately.. At the very least , what we are doing here is creating a conceptual framework of ideas for saving the existing wildlife. With more people contributing with their ideas (instead of mere sarcasm, since there is very little else in their brains to contribute) we could work towards at least a proposal which may see the daylight some day.
I personally believe, 'as you sow, so shall you reap', giving vent to your creativity will only nurture and strengthen further your own creative ability, to whose benefit? To your own and those around you and like a ripple spreading in a pond, to the society at large.

I was talking to a villager from bihar who was talking about 'sher' (?tiger/leopard - lots of villagers use this word loosely) lifting their goats. And how the village headman called a few tribals who trapped the 'sher' and then killed them with red hot 'sariya' (iron rods)!! Now there are no more sher in their tehsil and all the villagers are happy!!
He was telling this story with pride.
When i tried to educate him he look perplexed and said sher is an enemy of cattle and goats what good does it do? cant use it for milk, to plow the land, riding, as a beast of burden etc etc.
When i tried to tell him about predators and deer population relation, he replied 'par baboo sahib, humre gaon mein hiran naahi"
I was at a loss to make him understand about tigers forests etc.
Sadly it is true that there is no "direct" advantage in saving the big cats that even the less educated people can comprehend. According to them, few hours of our time in a safari for a couple of pics is not worth them losing their goats over.

i dont understand. whats the point in doing such a inhuman act? Whats the pride in taking down a game who cannot even fight for its survival? its a shame

There are two points as I see that have been raised.
1. This so called hunting is disgusting - I agree, this was not hunting this was butchry.
2. Should we show any hunting pics, videos or something on this forum as described by hvj1. That is more of a debate. We have at this point of time people who recide in many countries, should we or should we not let them share there hunting expriences? We are essentially setting some ground rules around what direction we want to take.
May I suggest that we should have a vote if we wish to depich hunting related info may be from out of india on the forum. If a substancial number of people would like to posts related to hunting may be we can have a seperate hunting related section and only members who wish to visit it may visit it and hunting posts may be banned at all other locations.
Just a thought...
