Pran, Ground bait is when you plan to fish in peace, not when you have to face an irate mob of local fishermen, worried about you catching ONE fish -seriously depletes their stock ;) :)
Yes, more recipes for ground bait than the stars in the firmament! so stick to cheapo stuff like Konda and ragi balls or ground dog biscuits and a scattering of chicken guts.Dont spoil your cat fish rotten by using exotic recipes!
cast GB about 15-30 min prior to casting, at a suitable, chosen spot, in small quantities. then cast a few metres away and have fun! You can use a small 'catty' to cast your ground bait...
Best
Axx
PS have hooks to spare, PM add, will send some across.

A priest is a religious gentleman.....very handy when fishing as the traditional way to kill a fish is to get a priest to headbutt it.

Pran,

It just occured to me that one of your home made knives is heavy enough to do duty as priest.

Asif,

Tried using small pieces of ragi ball for GB.Not sure if it works for catfish though. What's 'konda'?

>You can use a small 'catty' to cast your ground bait

How is that....

Mack The Knife,

Carried the knife with me.Did regret not carrying pliers and a nailcutter.

"Did regret not carrying pliers and a nailcutter."

Pliers ? And a nail cutter............as in toenail cutter or for cutting steel nails ? What the hell kind of fishing were you doing ? All I`ve seen is a couple of tiny Catfish ! The mind boggles at what you might have needed a pair of pliers and a nail cutter for !........Dental work for Sharks ? Or did you have to cut through a steel mesh fence to get to the lake......or when escaping from the fishermen ?
Or maybe you run a business doing pedicures/manicures on the bank ?

Grumpy,
Had trouble removing the hook from the catfish.Mack The Knife had told me to keep a nail cutter to cut the line if and when required. The pliers were to remove the hook if it were lodged inside the fish.

Pran, Congratulations on the catch. When I lived in Iowa the easiest thing to catch was catfish. Use chicken liver with some weight and let it settle at the bottom and in minutes, they bite. Then there was no limit on catfish so we cd bring it home so it made it a much easier decision for me, what to go for. Other fish, there was an 18inch limit.

To, avoid the spines, this is what I devised and worked well for me, use a towel to grab around the head, wrapping the spines inside the towel, just exposing the mouth, gently squeeze the sides of the mouth to keep it open to remove the hook.

Thanks guys.

Sharieff,
Landed the fish on a newspaper and held it with a towel while removing the hook.Didn't see the spines till I got back home.
