Katana,

Thanks for the reply. I too blew my chance at the Army. After my NCC 'C' certificate, I cleared OTA. For reasons that cannot be mentioned here, I had to let it go very reluctantly. I regret that to this day.

Inder, fantastic photos.Thrilling. Please do share more if you have any. Have you done any riding yourself?

What beautiful snaps Inder.
I have heard of this school. If I am not mistaken, these kids come for the annual show jumping events in Delhi.
What is also amazing is the high quality of the photographs.
 To your friend who has taken the snaps.

The first snap is that of an event popularly called "Girlfriend's handkerchief" . The rider picks up the piece of cloth from the ground while the horse is in full gallop.

The seventh snap of the boy sitting on the chair reading a news paper is also a popular part in most horse shows. You see the horseman charge on his mount shouting "Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar" and pull out the peg from right next to the guy feet (sitting on the chair) . Need guts to be sitting there.

Inder, did you attend PPS Nabha? I have a few uncles who studied there (in the 50's & 60's), all of them have very fond memories of their time there.

Cheers!

Glad you guys like the pics,

I had a big stash of pics from fairs in Punjab and Pushkar but recently lost all of them with some GB of other pics when I lost my hard disk :(

Vikram: Horses been in family since long actually In Haryana Punjab rearing 1-2 horses are kind of side business now days, mostly Nukras (Albino) from Marwari breed. I know many families who have horses or use to keep them. I have done some riding but not formally.

We have a nice academy here in Bangalore and I am thinking of starting formal riding since long. This thread had rekindle the desire.

Sorry to hijack your thread but here are some horsee pics from PPS Nabha, a school that is still keeping the warrior ways alive. Pics are from a friend who is an alumnus of PPS

Wow!!! the 7th picture of the series. This is called courage. The girl is so nonchalantly reading the newspaper as if nothing is happening where as the horse is so close. Too good!!!

Inder,

The second set of photographs, I am thinking, judging by the dresses and features of the riders, could be from Punjab province in Pakistan. What a brilliant set of pictures!

Yep Vikram,

They are indeed from Pakistan. They are doing a lot better than us when it comes to preserving the culture

This thread going way OT. This was about Polo, sorry Prashant

the panchkalyani is not restricted to marwari/sindhis or mares for that matter.
all breeds have it, only in india is it considered lucky, elsewhere they consider it unlucky. there is also an old poem which goes like this
One white foot, buy him.
Two white feet, try him.
Three white feet, be on the sly.
Four white feet, pass him by.

there is yet another

One white foot, keep him not a day,
Two white feet, send him far away,
Three white feet, sell him to a friend,
Four white feet, keep him to the end.

pps comes to delhi for the delhi horse show and the students put up a damn fine team. if only they had a polo team too, they could have continued the patiala polo tradition alive.
anyone one this forum who rides is welcome to a spot of tentpegging if in delhi.
To Excellence through Diligence.

On second glance that is indeed a girl. :stupid:

Truly delightful snaps from across the border, Inder. Interestingly (in general) they prefer horses to mares. In India we have no such (sex) prefence.

Safarigent . The two poems have very different meanings.Which one does one go for?
I was once attending a horse show in Doon with an Afghan gentleman late Mr Ammanullah Khan sitting next to me. He saw a horse with three white feet and told me that this one must be a "badmash".
Sure enough as the event progressed we saw this horse galloping across the field minus the rider. The rider could be seen in one end ( of the field), limping to safety.

"Girte Hain sheh sawar maidaan-e-jang me.
Woh Tifl kya girenge jo ghutno ke bal chalte hain".

I do know that Panchkalyani is considered auspicious amongst hindus. In fact the snap in which Arjun is stretching, has a panchkalyani mare in the background.

the first one is the one which tells us to stay away from horses with 4 feet.
The other one is also an old peom, a perfect counterpoint to the first one.
