@Nitro -- wonderful job. I had already read your account in a previous post in the forum and was impressed. Your work is commendable!
This is a good way to keep wild elephants at bay. BUT it is not a permanent solution.
We have to give them the space they need to live. Which (unfortunately in India) is shrinking every day with increase in human population.
@Prashant sir -- wonderful words of wisdom, but a sad reality!
At times, I stay silent. When I don't speak, it doesn't mean I don't have anything to say and running out of words. It only means that I have better things to do.

357 S&W,Prashant Singh,Dr.Jayakumar,Drifter & SR Swamy Thanks a lot.

Prashant - Mela Shikar did make sense once upon a time. Now, if at all there is a need to capture an elephant, tranquilization using a dart gun is a more humane process. On top of that, elephant capturing is totally banned. Moreover using Mela Shikar method was ok to capture elephants upto a certain height and age.

Training sub - adult elephants is always a challange. Most of them prefer to die than be dominated. The new method that we are using now is more scientific and practical. As of now we are applying this new method only on captive born calves.

Through my organisation - Assam Elephant Foundation, we are trying to train up neglected and abandoned elephants which were once used in logging camps as Koonkies and place them in areas exposed to Human Elephant Conflict to keep wild herds at bay.Buy doing this we are trying to keep a few adult captive elephants away from activities such as begging and illegal logging.

You have rightly said that these are all temporary measures. What we are doing, is buying time so that more intense conservation actions can be concepted, planned and implemented.Unfortunately, five years have already passed.

Dr.Jayakumar - All animals, be it in the wild or in captivity are dangerous and need to be handled properly. In captivty, elephants need to be understood and be given due respect for who and what they are.Like all other animals they too need their space. As for maintaining them, Well! family members do need to looked after and taken care of.
