Whats wrong here? City of billionaires witha $1Billion house being made cant even afford a decent zoo (sic) shame

The only zoo in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) plans to stuff its animals after their deaths and put them on show in a museum, officials say.

The only zoo in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) plans to stuff its animals after their deaths and put them on show in a museum, officials say.

The move follows a ban by India's central zoo authority on new animals being kept in confined spaces.

Mumbai zoo says it is unable to replace animals as they die because existing enclosures for some animals do not conform with anti-cruelty guidelines.

Stuffing the animals will at least allow people to see them, the zoo says.

Officials plan to set up a taxidermy museum as part of a $100m makeover at the zoo, which occupies 53 acres of land in central Mumbai.

Mangal, a 35-year-old Himalayan black bear, was a star attraction at the zoo until he died last week. He has already been stuffed along with a python and a leopard.

Renovation plan

Zoos across the state of Maharashtra are now sending animal carcasses to a taxidermy centre in Mumbai, the only one of its kind in India.

Taxidermy is the ancient art of preserving an animal's skin and skeleton and then stuffing it to make it appear lifelike.

The museum is expected to open to the public in two years time.

Mumbai zoo director Sanjay Tripathi says stuffing the animals and putting them on display will be educational.

"The public will be able to see and appreciate the animals and even study their body structure," he told the BBC's Prachi Pinglay.

Dr Tripathi said the zoo would not for now be adding to its existing population of more than 200 mammals, 500 birds and 45 reptiles.

"The existing enclosures do not accord to the new guidelines," he said, "and the taxidermy museum is part of the renovation plan.

"Once the open spaces surrounded by trenches are created we will be able to get new animals. It could take up to five years."

'Dying art'

Taxidermist and veterinarian Santosh Gaikwad - who runs the taxidermy centre in western Mumbai - says it is a multi-disciplinary art involving skills in leather tanning, animal anatomy, sculpting and painting.

Taxidermist at work in Mumbai
Preserving an animal by taxidermy takes weeks of painstaking work

"It takes about two months to make a trophy [out] of a medium-sized animal like a leopard," he said.

"We have received requests from other states like Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh also. It is a dying art and needs to be preserved. Such museums will spread awareness about the animals as well as this art."

However, animal rights activists are not so enthusiastic.

Campaigners are increasingly against confining wild animals in small spaces

They say stuffing animals may increase the illegal trade in animal skins and carcasses.

Debi Goenka, an environmentalist who studies taxidermy, says it is an ancient practice that was carried out for scientific studies or to show off hunted animals.

"Both these purposes are redundant now. Hunting as a sport is not allowed... so to stuff an animal's body which has anyways lived in captivity is just adding insult to injury," he said.

"How would ministers and civil servants like it if they were stuffed instead of the poor animals?"

First they took away the animals from the Circus.
Now they plan to display dead and stuffed animals in the Zoo.
Finally when our National Parks go the Sariska and Panna way . We will have no wild animals (alive) anywhere to show our future generations.
Who cares...........
Very Few.

The same can be the future of our Gun laws.
Stop All India licences.
Restrict them to states.
Then create smaller states.
Slowly restrict them to "district" level
and finally put a Ban on All weapons . (I mean the legal ones.....after all how can you stop the illegal ones?)

Prashant

I agree with your assessment same logic why does India need sanctuaries in the next digital world of Imax 3 d etc theaters and TVs folks could go to the museum and see and feel them. In the mean time chop off the forest put up Malls and Economic Zones a very diabolical circle ..same for the guns...

Jaipur zoo used to have a 'museum' section for stuffed dead animals for as long as i can remember. the entry was included n the zoo ticket price. i remember that used to be the least visited section in the zoo but was always a must see for me as a kid.

The taxidermy wasnt van ingen but was of decent quality and the animals were shown more as exhibits i.e in their natural environments ex. leopard on a tree, tiger in boulders and grass etc and the whole big cat area was dark (big cats being 'nocturnal creatures').

Wonder if they still have that section or have the mounts been sold by the corrupt officials.

Not sure what's so bad about stuffing the animals once they are dead (not killing them)
I saw the same think in many countries.

Though the best way to see animals is having them in a big Safari land and travel in your car.

The way I think this is a good thing, the way animals are getting extinct we may only have this left.

Correct Shooters,
The Jaipur Zoo near Albert Hall still has a museam for stuffed dead animals. I visited it very recently with my kids.

gverma ,
There is nothing wrong in keeping stuffed animals in a section of the zoo. What I was trying to say is that most zoo's in India are poorly maintained. As a child my visit to the Zoo was always Fun. Simply because the Zoo had a collection of animals from all over the world . You could see them all in one place. For example you could see an African lion and an Asian lion, A Panther and a Jaguar , a normal tiger and a white tiger, Indian Antelopes, African antelopes , Hippos and Rhinos ,Birds from all over the world .......all within one particular area. No where in the wild would you ever see such a wide variety of animals.
Further more you saw them in flesh and blood.....which was so much more fun that seeing a stuffed animal. Zoos where also a place where one could study animal behaviour.
Unfortunately most Zoos in India (today) are in a pathetic condition. Last year I visited the Delhi zoo with my kids and was surprised to see the number of enclosures devoid of animals.
Death of almost a dozen tigers in a span of 4 days in the Nandankanan zoo a decade ago , and regular deaths of animals in other zoos shows the plight of animals in these places. Many Zoos don't even have the finances to feed their animals and ask citizens to "adopt" them. By "adopting" the animal you pay for the food for a specified period of time.Till this time your name is displayed infront of the enclosure.
INSTEAD OF SPENDING MONEY ON THE TAXIDERMY ........SPEND IT TO IMPROVE THE CONDITION OF THE ANIMALS (living) YOU ALREADY HAVE.
In short what I mean is that you visit a zoo to see live animals ....not dead ones.
Just like the visit to the Circus was always more fun with all its animals .....The highlight of the circus being the performance of the Big Cats and the "Ring Master" which came right at the end of the Show.
Alas it is all gone now.

Prashant

The idea of adopting animals is a commendable one and very workable.
A similar initiative was taken and run successfully at Sheldricks Park Nairobi for orphaned African elephant calves who were separated from their herd when they strayed into human settlements bordering the jungles. I remember its was only US $50 per person or family per year and they updated us with info on our adopted calf.

What we need is not just adopt an animal/s, which would be a great start, but probably adopt an entire forest region. hvj1 has started in the direction. Our support to such a cause will also be seen in a positive way. Most lay people do not know that gun enthusiasts and former shikaris are wildlife conservationists of the highest order. It is my observation that all gun enthusiasts are keen photographers and nature enthusiasts. This needs to be highlighted in a big way. It would also help RKBA and help build bridges with PFA and the likes, as opinions about us will positive.

As for the zoo in Mumbai and in India elsewhere. Its a big problem compounded by issues like
- lack of trained personnel in zoos
- their lack of enthusiasm for the work
- lack of knowledge on animal care
- corruption in procurement of food and meat for the animals
- and land grabbers waiting to pounce on converting the zoo into another concrete jungle

Folks
Museums, Zoos, Libraries, Univ. Colleges and Hospitals in US atleast majority of them especially in City like NYC, CA ( big metropolitans) are sustained and maintained by charities and donations made by city's rich folks and companies. I have yet to see similar effort in India and Mumbai in particular why cant the rich folks donate funding for such causes. For some reason most of the rich in India havent stepped up to participate in such civic endeavors except for few exceptions. Although every time I go to a temple or a religious place in India they dont seem to have any dearth of donations . It could be something as simple as a drive by college or other organizations starting a drive to donations save a hippo etc.

Dear ngrewal,
Philanthrophy is more in the U.S. than it is here in India.
The mindset here is to give your entire savings to your kids rather than for the upliftment of mankind.
We do have people who contribute , but their percentage is comparatively less.
