How not to go hunting

Post by Grumpy » Sat Nov 18, 2006 11:29 pm

I was invited to help clear some Fallow yesterday but you can tell that I haven`t been out for a while by how unprepared I found myself so here are a few basic tips:
Remember to check your ammo BEFORE you go out;
Remember to take your galloching knife;
Remember that if you swap cars that you need to transfer things like the deer-bag, bipod and hoisting rope;
Remember that however warm and dry you are in your camo waterproofs you can`t drink rain and a flask of some sort of hot beverage is very welcome when the weather is cold and wet;
Remember that your Australian ventilated stetson is singularly useless at keeping out rain ...... and that a hood doesn`t keep the rain off your specs ! and
Remember to give some thought to your approach as by the time you`ve had to make a half mile detour through hedges, ditches and barbed wire fences the deer might have moved off elsewhere.
Apart from all that it was a successful trip.......but not a very enjoyable one !

What`s that you say ? Speak up can`t you ? Damn youngsters always mumbling. "Deer protection ?" What do the Deer need protecting from ? "Fear ?" Fear what" OK, no need to shout. I`ve got it now:
DON`T FORGET YOUR HEARING PROTECTION !

I completely empathise with you,Grumpy. I have a thing or two to recount when we meet.One consolation for you that the hunt wasn't fruitless.Any more details of the hunt?
