Shooter, thast stretch of cauvery is run by WASI for conservation/ breeding and sport angling-means a strict catch and release for mahseer.
I still dont agree with the ' take home any 4 fish other than mahseer ' policy being tried out by WASI.
A handline is baited, tied to a stake and left over night for any fish to get hooked , tire itself out fighting and the jolly old poacher comes by at first light and takes it home. While it is the norm in many other places, WASI lakes are protected areas, and this 'hand lining' IN WASI lakes, constitutes illegal trapping/poaching.

oh thats what you meant. yes leaving the line overnight is poaching.
is baiting allowed there? (i mean live bait)
i have seen and done fishing by handlines my self.
it is hard work as your hands work instead of the reel. letting go and pulling in to and fro.

i grew up guring the 10 year drought in rajasthan so not many big fish left and had to do with 1/2-1 kg fish.

but seen pics of big fish landed with hand lines this way and it takes many many minutes of this "to and fro" to land an average sized fish.

If one is not precise, the fish can snap the line or the reel can cut through ones hands and fingers.

Shooter,
hand lining is an accepted practice down the ages and I am not against it.However, the stretch given to WASI by Govt of Karnataka, is for mahseer conservation and sport angling...which means, such non C&R fishing is considered illegal by accepted rules/norms of WASI...yes, live baiting is alloqwed .

Caught quite a few in the begining but I haven't fished for them for over a year.
