28 Pheasants in 1 Minute- Ripon's Challenge

Post by Vikram » Thu Jul 21, 2016 2:24 am

Do you think you can do it?

For those who do not know who Ripon was:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick ... s_of_Ripon
Lord Ripon was a fast, accurate game shooter, who was noted to down 28 pheasants in sixty seconds as a shooting party guest on the Sandringham House estate.[3] He also holds the record of the greatest recorded lifetime bag of birds shot: 556,000, including 241,000 pheasants.
Shooter will fill in a lot more details about him.

Best-

Lord Ripon was famous not only as a shot but his famous rivalry with lord walsingham.

Ripon, walsingham, duleep singh and H... something (huntingdon? Hutchinson) were unanimously the top 4 best shots in the UK and by colonial mindset also extended to the best shots in the world.

However the rankings within the four are in dispute in that some people say walsingham was better shot and some say ripon was better.

What is more interesting is that both were called lord de grey ones surname being de grey and the other being earl de grey before he became maeqess.
This created a lot of confusion in people back then especially when recounting the shooting exploits of "lord de grey".

The rivalry for the title of "best shot" was so famous that many people invited both of them to the same shoot to see for themselves who was better.
There was a famous drive in which both were standing next to each other and both shot 28 birds in 28-29 shots (i forget the exact numbers but these figures are not far off the mark) and that included 6 consecutive "right and lefts" (two birds in two shots without lowering the gun). This small incidence not only heightened their already formidable reputation but also made it even more difficult to compare who was better because their performance was equal on the same drive and that too on adjacent pegs thus eliminating variables like height, topography etc.

For people like me both remain my heroes.

There are many stories of the shooting exploits of the above gentlemen which makes it more difficult to judge who was a better shot. In future, I shall try to write more about these legendary shots.
You want more gun control? Use both hands!

God made man and God made woman, but Samuel Colt made them equal.

It may be of interest to note that Lord Ripon died of cardiac arrest while shooting!!! (after downing 52 birds)
