Depends on the calibre being used, Abhijeet. .30-06 (the calibre I have seen being used for this purpose) will stun the fish long enough for someone to dive in and retrieve the fish. I have only seen this technique used for murral and this is one fish that stays alive for hours out of the water, which means one can take home some very fresh fish - just wrap it in a damp gunny sack, if there is no icebox at hand.

This is more cool than the one I had heard off.

Night fishing can be done with a 0.22 rifle and a straight beam flashlight. Just focus the light on the surface fo the pond or lake(still water required for this one). when the fish comes up just pull the trigger.

I haver only heard this one from some elders (read ex- army guys) so i cannot validate the same..

have any of you guys tried this one??

Ive actually tried this while fishing in the Yamuna river in Agra - used an airgun and that worked pretty fine.

I do not find using a rifle as un-sporting.It's akin to using a bow and arrow,requires skill and patience and you are not doing any needless destruction.There is however the possibility of a ricochet and a 30-06 bullet travels a looong looong distance.Even from a ricochet.

Erm... Dev, do you actually have permission to fish in the waters that you intend going to or have already gone to? I am talking legal permission, not the bottle of rum in exchange for fishing rights type of permission. What is it they say about people living in glass houses?

To answer your question the person I am refering to does have permission to shoot murral. He just so happens to own the lake....

The only load of crock is that you cannot differentiate between shooting murral for the pot and as a sport and dynamiting fish for commercial reasons. There is a vast difference between the two and please do not preach down to me as I am paying my dues (however small) when it comes to anti-dynamiting activities.
