Hunting Safari

Post by drjones » Tue Jul 26, 2011 12:42 pm

Hi, I would like to go on a hunting safari to SA or nearby places. I would like to know some decent gaming reserves. Most of the popular ones charge heavily, like the McDonald hunt, Jeffery etc. I want to know a decent place with accomodation etc and nominal charges. I don't want to get into some scamming places. Anyone has some idea please share your knowledge. Thanks..

You can contact Kraziesardar,a member here who has been on a safari. You can find his posts here in this section. Also, you can post on http://www.accuratereloading.com

ASFAIK, SA & Botswana are more expensive than other places. Zimbabwe and Zambia are good for prices, and Zambia is much more stable and safe.

Try emailing rorygellatly(at)hotmail.com Rory is a PH in Zambia. I corresponded with him on the issue of a double rifle. He came across as a decent guy and one willing to tailor a hunt according to budget.

Thanks a lot guys for your feedback and wishes. Getting a few leads, waiting for more. By the way, does anyone have an idea about bringing the trophies back to India? I mean the customs, regulations etc. Cause Iam very particular to bring back some fond memories as not only photos but also trophies. Thanks.

He is talking about me Dr Jones.
You can go through my post "Hunting Abroad". In that I have given the broad outline of importing trophies. The most important document is the import licence issued by the DGFT as hunting trophies are a "restricted item of trade". You also need clearence from the Wildlife Dept and your state Chief Wildlife Warden.
Please make sure all paper work is complete. Else there will be problems.
I imported the trophies some years ago so one must be up to date with the latest rules and regulations. Needless to say things are getting stricter by the day.
Safarigent who went for a shoot to Africa very recently informed me that one such addition is that one must have an Arms licence as well.
I found that very strange because it is not necessary for you to go on a hunt with your own weapon. I find it more convenient to hire one from the professional hunter itself.

Don't know about competitive pricing, but Namibia seems to be the most hassle free, as far as bringing in of firearms goes. You just fill out a piece of paper, make, caliber, serial number, number of cartridges; the fellow checks your gun(s), stamps the paper, and you are free to go. I really enjoyed the place; and so did the missus, who was very apprehensive about the trip to begin with.
