Welcome to IFG! And kindly post in the correct section
This is a very common question...to which there is no black&white answer.
Application of the mind is needed to interpret the provision of the Arms Act 1959 and Arms Rules 1962
To start with one needs to refer to Schedule I of the Arms Rules. This Schedule elaborates Rule 3. This lists, at least generally, what is prohibited and what is not.
Category 1 (a), (b) and (c) defines what is prohibited.
1(a)
Is an open ended clause that empowers the central govt. to prohibit any weapon of any category by notification should the need arise
1 (b)
- All semi auto firearms other than NPB pistols. This means semi auto-rifles, carbines, shotguns of any bore/caliber, including .22 and 12bore. .22 Semi auto rifles can be allowed if they are used exclusively for target shooting within the ambit of a recognized shooting club/association.
- Any smooth bore gun (i.e. generally shot guns) with barrel less than 20"
1(c)
List of standard government service bores/calibers,
- Bolt action or Semi-Auto rifles of .303" bore
- Bolt action or Semi-Auto rifles of 7.62mm bore (this is 7.62mm x 51mm)
- Muskets of .410" bore
- Pistols/Revolvers/Carbines of .380" bore (this is .38/200 British)
- Pistols/Revolvers/Carbines of .455" Rimmed bore (this is .455 Webley/Eley)
- Pistols/Revolvers/Carbines of 9mm bore (This is 9mmx19mm Para and no other 9mm)
Though not listed in the schedule, by applying logic 7.62mmx39mm (AK series), 5.45mmx39mm (AK74), and 5.56mmx45mm (M16/INSAS etc) fall under prohibited category.
All else would be Non-Prohibited Bores subject to availability and practical considerations.

A couple of days ago, I noticed someone's signature which quoted something like this: "I don't need to be careful. I have a gun". Me thinks that person may need to be extra careful.
