Most dogs are just pets,not watch dogs,like the german sheperd and dobberman.dogs let loose at home tend to be friendly than those chained are or caged.i feel most pets are pests?

Vikram i would just point out one theory,these guys smell guys who are upto no good.A person who does not have any malafide intention will never be harmed unless the dog has been ill treated on purpose to just make it vicious.They have some 6th sense,i never would befriend a guy who doesnt pass my Dog,done a practical a lot of times and the Dog was always right,you mistreat any animal to make it vicious and it will lash out at anyone including family members.
DOC very strong views,we have had dogs save us not only from animal predators,but also human ones,i totally disagree with you,GSD, Dobbs & Pitbulls are some of the gentlest dogs i have ever seen,they are not be Caged or Chained to make then vicious,a wonderful pet specially a dog is not just good vibes in the house ,AMC { American Medical Council} has just proven that Dogs help people suffering from Hypertension to children with Down Syndrome.your views are extremely biased i wonder why------?

My dog will welcome anyone. But God help the person who tries to leave. You can check out any time you like.. but you can never leave.

Last year i lost my boxie (Boxer dog) saving my life from a cobra, he died within 10 minutes infront of me and i was just helpless. A perfect guard dog no one can even think of entering our premises at night and was just fearless. At present i am having a pair of German shepherd, they are also good guard dogs. This week itself there was someone trying to enter our premises but they foiled there plan.
I have seen my boxer, observing others behaviour and they do have 6th sense. My GSD's on the other hand don't like any other person except my family. It should be clear for what you need a dog and proper training and exercising for that is very important.

Hi Bhupi,sorry for your loss,i know how you feel,Boxie must be with God, protecting him from all kind of Cobra's,Dr JAYAKUMAR,hope you read this,they are the only creatures in GOD's cold/ crazy world who will sacrifice their own life,so as to their master is safe.Do let me know if you can think of any other creature around you which would do the same-----,and for Gods sake dont say HUMANs.

One thing dogs do is to simply put off/scare away some percentage of people. Most people who enter a house with a dog do not know exactly how the dog will behave and this is true for me too and I am a dog lover who has had a series of dogs for decades.

If you read news items about burglaries in India, you find that most burglaries are based either on inside information (when the owner is out or where he has kept stuff) or on people who have been snooping around to see weak spots and when the owners leave home. A dog staying at home tends to put that home on a lower priority for a burglar because barking can simply attract attention.

A dog cannot be a substitute for basic precautions. If you have a dog and 5 servants - one for every job that needs to be done it's not the dog, but the servants, their friends and relatives who are the weak link.

Dog is one of the most intelligent and friendly pet for human. However, a trained dog is recommended.

As Dr. Jayakumar said its important that security dog is chained/locked in dog house and avoid human contact (other than owner, care taker) is important.

Bhupi........ my sympathies. Boxie would be at peace in the Happy Hunting Grounds...... he's got lots of good four legged company there..... Hachiko and Robin come to mind.....

Keeping dogs chained is an option if you have a large isolated farmhouse, and the only visitors are either the residents, or thieves. All the dog-related injuries or deaths (e.g. the horror stories about rotties and pitbulls) are all (without exception) related to dogs which are kept chained, half-starved, and otherwise maltreated to make them good "guard dogs".

Living in close proximity to other humans (say in a city apartment block), you just can't take the risk of getting a dog all aggressive and worked up because he's chained all day long. If my rottie took a bite of a neighbor's kid, that would be the end of the kid, and subsequently the dog would be put down and I might be fined, imprisoned, whatever. So I needed to socialise the puppy.

Now he's all fine with all people whom he knows, but the gas delivery guys or courier guys, say, get him on his feet, ears forward, tail erect, and you can hear a rrrr-RRRRR-rrrrr-RRRRRR from deep within his belly. In fact, a sanyasi type of guy came for donations and this little (55 kg) puppy almost went for him!! (since the sanyasi did manage to get a decent donation from me, I assume the dog's 6th sense was working fine!! )

Of course, he remains a predator, and like most dogs, he also has a sense of humour. So, he will get very close to people who are scared (and they can smell fear, believe you me!), just for the heck of it, and kind of laugh when they scream or overreact! (if you have a dog, you know when it laughs or smiles!). And yes, Amit357, he is a very gentle chap, who likes nothing better than for my son (half his weight) to sit on the ground, so he can put his huge hairy head on my son's lap and get tickled behind the ears. No experience with pit bulls, but my aunt's GSD was similar (they did have a large property). He would allow me to ride him (I was a small kid then, by the way!), but he did send two thieves to the hospital.

The dog will protect you out of love (only horses and in some cases elephants are known to do that!), and since the home is "his property" he will protect it. You don't need to ill-treat the poor fellow to protect your home!!! You don't keep the Army chained up so they can guard the borders better, do you? Or your security guards?

Of course, protection training will help, but most dog trainers in this country rely on the "starve-and-chain training" method. Get a good police dog trainer, or an army one. Since they are officially not allowed to moonlight, look for a retired guy. Police and Army dogs are the best looked-after (I have seen Army dogs with patrols in Kashmir - the dogs were wearing boots and coats and earmuffs!!). The trainers who work for the real big shots are also good, but frightfully expensive. In fact, I interviewed that chap who trained Raj Thackeray's and Amitabh Bachchan's dogs, but his fees would mean that either me or the dog would have to starve! So I went for the retired police trainer route.

Most importantly, the dog is a family member, and needs to be treated as such. If you need protection, pure protection, get a gun. A pure tool, no emotions involved. Or hire a security guard. Don't keep a dog if "protection" is the only reason. You'll only make his life extremely miserable.

Definitely Amit their's no other creature who could have done this. I was just few steps rather just 3 feets away from an angry snake who wants a safe passage and boxie was not allowing him move, by running around him and barking like hell, in the morning hours at 5.30 AM. I wake up and went out rubbing my eyes to leash Boxie and found myself in cobra's reach. He made a loud hiss sound, and in a matter of seconds attacked me, luckily i put my leg away and stepped back but was on the ground. Snake attacked me again but this time boxie was so fast and took the fangs in his mouth. there after it was dog & snake fight, which my boxie won by killing the snake and saving my life. My parents and i watched the whole episode, after killing the snake Boxie brought him near me and put it infront of my dad. He looked at me and my dad as if he was saying look boss i have done my job and within minutes he fell unconscious and never wake up. That was the first time i have seen my dad crying, and that too for Boxie a Dog.
