The Times of India, New delhi 16/12 reports that a Noida businessman, short at two car hijakers with his IIama pistol and saved himself. This should be an eye opener to the anti gun lobby. With one of the hijacker getting killed and the other in the hospital, the police hopes to arrest the rest of the gang. The SSP of Noida has praised the businessman for his courage and presence of mind. This is a good example of how crime situation can be improved. The death of one of the criminals will certainly have an effect on other gang members and car hijakers operating in the area. The Government should encourage other responsible citizens to go in for firearms, so that they can stand up against the criminals.
The number of firing ranges in the country should also be increased, including at least one in the Greater Noida area. Working ladies , particularly those who have shift duties
need to be encouraged to get trained and go in for fire arms , like Baby Browning .
Another interesting news is in Asian Age of 16/12. It states that MHA vide a circular has allowed issue of license for PB arms to members of the public who face threats from the Naxals in the Naxal affected areas of the country. This is a very welcome development.

good piece of news, as law enforcement hasnt tried to contort this out of proportion, and has seen this as it is, "Self Defence".
the last part seems to be eye wash, newsprint matter from MHA.

A link would be highly appreciated...
Here's a link about 3 days old in the same paper The Times of India
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city ... 096407.cms
MUMBAI: The threat from terrorists has made the government do a rethink on gun ownership rules. Civilians facing a "grave threat" to their lives can now apply for a licence to own prohibited bore weapons — hitherto usually granted to defence personnel and for family heirlooms.
In a circular recently submitted in the Bombay high court, the Union ministry of home affairs said applications for grant of prohibited bore weapons would be considered for specific categories of weapons.
Those who can be granted the licence include people who live in areas where terrorists are active and face a "grave and imminent threat to their lives", government officials who, due to the nature of their job, have made themselves targets in the eyes of terrorists, MPs/MLAs, private citizens and family members of people who have been associated with anti-terrorist programmes.
The circular states that such individuals can apply for prohibited bore weapon licences to the MHA, along with police verification and recommendations of the district magistrate concerned and the state government.
Under the arms rules, prohibited bore weapons include 9mm pistols and handguns of .38, .455 caliber and .303 rifles. All semi-automatic and fully-automatic guns also fall in this category.
Non-prohibited bore weapons, which civilians can apply for include handguns of .35, .32, .22 and
.380 caliber. The Union government had tightened guidelines for issue of such weapons as well. "At present, there are no norms for grant of NPB weapons and some state governments may
be issuing arms licences liberally," the MHA circular says. NPB gun licences will be granted only after a threat assessment by the police and after verification of the antecedents of the person applying for the same.
The government has, however, extended the ambit of persons who can seek transfer of gun licences. Normally, legal heirs who could seek transfer of gun licences meant spouse, son or daughter. This has now been extended to son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother and sister of the existing licensee.
The government has also decided to maintain a database of people who have been granted gun licences.
The guidelines were submitted to the high court, which was hearing a PIL on a gun licence issued to former Bihar revenue minister Jamshed Ashraf. According to the PIL, Ashraf was granted the licence from the Nhava Sheva police station on the basis of a forged ration card.
In a circular recently submitted to the HC, the Union ministry of home affairs said applications for grant of prohibited bore weapons would be considered for specific categories of weapons. Applicants include civilians who face a grave threat to their lives.

Any .25 acp or 6.35 mm is not a good idea for anyone in a self defence situation. Better than nothing ? Yes it is , but one shooting with it at the potential threat might just annoy the threat more instead of neutralizing him !! If the sight of a small pistol discourages the bad guy enough to retreat, thats a different story, less likely though.

A .380 acp a.k.a 9 mm short is a good non-prohibited caliber in our context , a good self defence pistol round as the larger calibers are either prohibited or not available in India.
On the other hand in our country .35 cal is less common a caliber with the law abiding license owners. The .35 caliber family, at least in North America, includes the .357 Magnum, .35 Remington, .356 Winchester, .358 Winchester, .35 Whelen, .350 Remington Magnum and .358 Norma Magnum in ascending order of power. Out of this only .357 magnum is available here and that also at a exorbitant price.

.25 acp or so that matter .22LR hitting the heart or brain is sufficient to send the receiver to the other world. We should keep the point of discussion to arming of law abiding citizens for self defence. The type of arms must suitable will depend upon the user, his or her physical features and several related factors. The time has not yet arrived to get into academic discussions regarding 9mm , .38 etc as sufficient material for discussion on these aspects are already floating on the Internet.
In the normal circumstances, the NP Bore firearms are sufficient for self protection, of course it does not give the snob value added to having a PB firearm. The same is the case on the ongoing debate regarding imported and IOF products.System failure can happen in both types of fire arms, jamming of imported pistols at times of need is not unheard of.

.22LR lung shot and guy will bleed to death. point is that he will keep shooting back, with .45 lung shot and he will collapse at once. for that matter 9mm is not much better then .22lr, solders from Iraq reported that guys who been shot with 9mm few times still were able to shoot back.
nice that such case getting through to media, people need to know that they can fight back

One member being killed will have the least effect on the gang in whole, they still want roti at the end of the day unless you that businessman could offer them a job of some sort.
How many rapes happen in Delhi alone? Too many right, then why don't parents buy their daughters guns, rather they ask them to stay away from dangerous area or get back home in broad day light. Fact is nothing can make anti-gun people to change their minds. If some one is shot in their family by a burglar, they will say "what ever god wants, happens" As far as I can tell, majority of people in India do not want firearms or simply they can not afford. So even if the government makes the process of obtaining firearm easy, not many people are going to arm their selves hence nothing is going to be hunky dory as a lot of pro gun people claim. Personally speaking, I do not want the firearm process to be so easy either because in as social community as ours, devrani and jethani won't be fighting, they will just shoot each other.
Considering how successful our local law enforcement is, the NOIDA police had to praise the businessman.
