Industrialist shoots down Salem smuggler
Bengaluru: September 28th, 2010
In a daring reply to poachers who entered a house and brought down a fully grown sandalwood tree, an industrialist fired three rounds on them, killing one and injuring another. The incident happened under Hulimavu Police Limits on Bannerghatta Road in the early hours of Tuesday, around 1.30 am, when the owner of the house Jayaram woke up after poachers switched off the electricity.
By then the poachers had managed to cut two sandalwood trees from the compound. Upon seeing poachers cut down the tree and trying to smuggle outside Jayaram fired in the air using his licensed revolver. But the poachers reportedly came towards the main door with lethal weapons in their hands.
One of the poachers 28-year-old Jagadish from Salem, rushed towards the main door and that’s when Jayaram opened fire killing him on the spot. The third bullet hit the second poacher, but he managed to escape with the help of another, in the darkness. Mr Jayaram owns a machinery workshop on Bannerghatta Road, spread across 4.5 acres of property which includes his residence.
When the poachers struck there were only three people at home including Jayaram’s wife and daughter. Jayaram shot at the poachers from behind a window. South East DCP B.N.S Reddy said that the incident will send a strong signal to anti-social elements as well as those who come to Bengaluru to poach or loot.
“In fact we are honouring Mr Jayaram for his daredevil act. The men who came from Tamil Nadu committed the crime by trespassing into Jayram’s property and tried to attack him when he caught sight of them. In order to safeguard their life or property the gun licence holders can open fire.During 1989 in a similar incident a notorious dacoit Chowta Prasad was shot dead by a resident in Attibele when he entered a house with the intent to commit a robbery,” DCP Reddy said.
An investigating officer said that clues about other gang members have been sourced from the deceased’s diary.
“Several numbers from Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru have been scribbled in Tamil language and we are trying to trace the gang,” said the officer.

“I had to shoot to save my family and my land,” said Jayaram who will soon be honoured by city police. Jayaram was in his home when he heard the sound of a tree falling after it had been axed around 1.30 am. When he called out, a shovel was thrown at him. Realising the danger, Jayaram rushed inside the house, locked the door and took his single barrel gun into his hand.
He saw three men armed with lethal weapons hurrying towards the door. He stuffed the barrel through the window pane, which is parallel to the main door. “First I shot one round in the air to threaten them. Instead of going back, they continued coming towards us and one of them hit the door with a heavy object. Left with no choice, I fired at them” said Jayaram.
Meanwhile, Jayaram’s employees who were sleeping at a nearby outhouse came out hearing the shots. Informed by Jayaram, a night patrolling Hoysala arrived within 10 minutes of the incidents followed by Hulimavu police.
“I didnt know I had shot one poacher dead till the police found the body near the gate” Jayaram said.
