now about the punch on the snout theory:
i had a labrador which did not get along very well with my bully and they would get into fights often.i have tried hittin the bully on the snout with everything at hand but it does not let go of its grip.the best way i found was to close its nose forcibly so it has to open its mouth to breathe.
so guys any of you if any day you encounter a bully charge please dont punch it on the snout lest you make it more aggressive.
and bullies who have a fighting parentage dont need to be attack trained their temprament ony evolves in that manner.
i agree that it is a dangerous dog to keep at home but left open at night it is the best security system any one can get.
and by the way my bully wont even eat anything thrown to it from outside te gate!!
it is a dog to be kept with great responsibility.
it is very posessive of its family members but is vary of strangers.with family it is as docile as a labrador if not more!!!
and guys please understand what i am trying to say a dog is not a security system by itself.there is no such security system"by itself" all security systems just warn you but this one will definately give the thief someting to ponder about in his free time!!!

Vishosingh,

Tapping a dog's snout to separate it from another pet is one thing. Hitting it hard enough to kill or incapacitate it is another. An attacker/intruder is not going to be bothered about the nicety of leaving your dog alive if he comes to get you. If it comes to walking the walk, I am more than happy to take care of any dog born with my hands, particularly if it is an aggressive animal. I wouldn;t hurt a good dog - I love dogs myself.

And, if your "resources" are inadequate, tough luck. Check out the AKC website and associated links. ALl it takes is a Google search. Believe me, it would give vastly more information than a site set up by some salesman trying to sell pups and dreams - no make it delusions - of the greatest guard dogs ever bred.

mehul
have you ever had an experience with this type of dog?if not then let me tell you i have a friend who is very fond of this breed he has shown me a bully taking a blow from a baseball bat to th eshoulder and the chest without even a scream it may sound cruel but that is how they make them more aggressive.
believe me it is not so easy killing a dog with your hands. it is not standing up straight for you to take a punch at the snout. try punching the snout of a charging dog you will definately miss
if searching on the net try :
http://www.moloss.com/brd/ab/b017/history.html

it is a much better resource for this breed it is only dedicated to molosser dogs
the akc might be resourceful but this is better. try it.

i still stand by my point mehul. you can only realise the potential of this breed if you have owned one. believe me.

Vishosingh,

I am not out to sell pups here or to pimp any breed. I am a qualified dog judge and yes, I have handled dogs - several of them - for more than 20 years now. If your friend hasn't been able to kill a dog with a baseball bat that is more than a comment on his physique. Next you'll be telling me your dog is bulletproof.

I know what Molossers are and have experience with several of the older breeds as well as the newer South American developments. If I see BS on the forums, then, as a moderator, it is my responsibility to call it BS.

FYI we have a classifieds section for selling stuff here and it is free. Other forums are for serious discussion, not advertising.

Visho,Navi,Mehul.
My exposure is limited- pet dogs-a dob and a lab many years ago-absolutely lovable pooches-the lab was so friendly, she got dognapped!
But, in those tranquil and peaceful times, the sight of a dog in a house was deterrent enough.
It is not the degree of efficiency that I would like to comment about-I m sure that specific dogs/ breeds can, and have been trained,to awesome levels of mayhem...would an average joe homeowner be able to afford-fiscally and mentally -some of these super dogs?in today's 1100-1800 sq ft apartment dwellers culture, it would be hard on any but a pomeranian...

hey no need to get so offended man its a free world and every one is entitled to his or her opiniion . and fyi i am neither advertising nor sellin stuff i am simply trying to tell you that it is just not one site ,or having been a judge that can tell yu the power or the potential of a dog ,having a first hand experience maight help as well. it was a discussion until now but if you want to trow your weight around as a moderator then i guess it was bs.

i totally agree with your point of convieniance but the only thing i want to point out is the power of these dogs. and the deterrent factor they play in thefts.

Take it easy Gentlemen. After all we are discussing.

I think we all are agreed upon the fact that dogs cannot be relied upon as the sole bulwark against the criminals/intruders. We also need to keep a gun or a weapon we have access to and be ready to use it should it be necessary. Agreed. Any dispute here? Right then…

I see that Mehul’s, as he often says, argument is that dogs are at best only early warning mechanisms than stoppers of any determined attackers. Here, Visho seems to argue that the Bully dogs can and deter any attackers. Right? To my thinking, there are merits to both sides. Criminals do not like odds against them and a large or two large dogs definitely count against them. We rarely read robbers going for homes protected by dogs. Individual cases, yes.Stastically, if there are such statistics available, they may not. This is a pure heuristic conjecture on my part.

Mehul’s argument that the large dogs are inherently vulnerable by their breadth of snouts..Hmmm. I don’t know. To take on a 100 pound determined Rottweiler, it takes lot of determination on the attacker’s side.

Once, I chanced to see a Rottweiler that belonged to a family friend. The way that beast came at the end of the leash,

Gentlemen- at 6’1”,100Kg+, weight training, boxing etc, a fair share of the usual scrapes, and finally having grown around dogs and having handled various types, aggressive and friendly- believe me when I say “ my family jewels( forgive the expression) went into hiding and took me a long time to regain my equanimity. Very few times I was scared of a dog. I wouldn’t like to tackle that kind of dog when I am prepared. Two such, definitely No. And unprepared? Never. I might get one with a knife or a cutlass kind of knife, not without injury to myself. But the second one will surely solve my weight problem instantly, if in a very painful way. Will I back down from such a dog if I must? No. Simply, I wouldn’t like to get into that kind of situation.

Will robbers like to take chance against them? Unless the motive is so powerful, they wouldn’t. If the motive is so great, a gun is a must and the dogs, too. They will buy you time. A Pomeranian might buy you thirty seconds to 1 minute. A pair of Rottweilers (if you like it, Visho, fill in your Bullys) would buy at least 3-5 minutes and probably lower the number of active and willing attackers. Moreover, the guard dogs seldom give warning before they launch an attack. Often the fighting dogs have higher pain threshold and can take a lot of beating. Knife, if the dog is moving fast and your heart beating faster, may not be easy. Not impossible. But, not easy. Big dogs, not Mastiffs or Saint Bernard, but dogs like the Rotties, pitbulls,Dogos, Ridgebacks, Canary Dogs, etc, are very athletic and move quite fast.

Visho, coming to your examples of making an aggressive dog by beating it with a baseball bat, sorry my friend. I call that cruelty and would like to see that person behind bars. My dog is my loving friend.I will never like to hit it with a baseball bat to make him aggressive.I will be ver aggressive to who does.

Aggressive dogs are not best guard dogs. Properly trained and socialised dogs are your best bet. Fighting ability and aggression are two different things and exactly this kind of people who are responsible for vilification of the breeds like the pitbulls and Rotties.

Do you see that pic Mark posted. That Rottie is a putty in that child’s hand.It is not aggressive. Go near that kid or try to harm, it will kill the attacker. It is not aggressive.I would like to see Mark’s take on that dog.

But, despite the merits of these dogs, they are not super dogs and they are mortal too. You cannot rely on them wholly. That kind of expectations are not only cruel to the dogs, they are unrealistic.
End of this rambling. Keep a dog or two and keep a gun. The dog, stronger the better.

Best-
Vikram

Hey,a doggy topic! How did I miss this ?
There is so much I would love to contest and debate but its such an old thread that I guess I should let "sleeping dogs lie" especially since my comps are acting up again and posting from the mobile is tedious.
Great post by Vikram, totally agree with you.
Mehul may I know which is the Kennel Club on whose judging panel you were on and when?Know quite a few doggy people maybe we have some common friends :-)
Regards,
Yaj.
