A 223 knock about rifle...

Post by eljefe » Tue Apr 20, 2010 6:40 pm

A couple of months ago, I got myself a Stevens200 in 223.The stock was absolutely Mattel-tupperware was a couple of degrees tougher.
I tried bedding it, NOTHING would stick-as I found later to my disgust-it was made of polyethylene. So I drove 2x 3/8" threaded stock thru the fore end, right up to the recoil lug area.Still no Joy.
Then i found Boyd's stock and ordered myself one.It duly came on a week later , and it has been a while since I could sit down and do some work,
here goes:

Wrote to Boyd's stocks , reply was -their stocks are beddable-acraglas or whatever-take your pic.
It was a dull rainy day, and I'm not going to sit at home and wish for sun, borrowed SWMBO car for its awd -the range is a bit offroad and I landed up in p0uring rain-range Officer and a couple of others there.Unloaded stuff, lets see the fall of shot,I'm the only shooter:

The best performers were the 69 grwith 24.5Gr of ADI2209
The Hornady Amax 75gr were next, Win 55 Gr HPFMJ were ok and the Norinco ?55Gr were rough, 6-8" low at 300m, hard to lift bolt, dirty necks
Enjoyed myself so much after such a long break, I'll reload some 69 &75 and go for a real range test...

Dirty necks are normal. Ideally the powder trace should look like a sine wave. Did you get primer cratering?

Try loading some SMK's I have had great luck witht the 52 grain SMK's in my .222 Rem Mag and .22-250 especially with Varget. N-133 is another great powder for .223

No cratering but very stiff bolt lift for 3/5 rounds.didnt try any more.Varget I dont have -closest is 2209-equivalent, of IMI 4350.I chose the 1:9 twist for the slightly heavier bullets.Lets see next week, I may get some reloading in soon. The 69 grainers were pretty decent, though.

4350 is a good powder as well. Try the Reloader 10/11 as well.

Considering the amendments to the Arms policy why not post about boomerangs.I believe there are some that can be used for hunting as well.

None at all,Pete- straight from the buyer, clean and barrel checked, to the range
She went straight to the Gunny from the range .Havent checked yet.Am petrified of opening up a Smelly!

Pete-
You forgot the ' hair of dog' !
Waiting to get me a 4inch vise on my work / reloading bench.I have been given a 'huge' new place to 'work' on guns and fishing tackle by SWMBO-the garage.Actually quite pleasant in autumn. My study was fumigated/vacuumed and has reverted to being a study-daughter's.I never knew the carpet could hold so much grinding dust or a table could get so scarred by delicate reloading (and bluing) and grinding and all those happy things
All i need is cork sheets to complete my 'bedding ' armentarium for the smelly-there's lots of stuff left over from the blighted Stevens polyeth stock. Latest kick? want to try baking powder 'filler' and araldite.
But all that wood is definitely very tempting...an Oz version of 'Whistler's mother' ? Mona Lisa is passe ROTFL

Autumn?
Open up the Smelly.. and put it back together. What ever is left over is 'spares' from Smelly #2// :P

Seriously... get on with it. You are over analysing things.

BTW... Varget is actually manufactured in Kangaroo Land..
