Well to start with they belong to two entirely different categories... the M82 is essentially an Anti material rifle and the Dragunov is an infantry mans cranium buster.

Neither is the best nor any other. Its the person using the arms who determines what is best. You had Soviet snipers in WWII with ancient Moisin Nagants shooting pretty effectively...

By virtue of its basic role of destroying expensive enemy equipment like parked aircraft, communications equipment, vehicles, the $5 cost of the M82s 50 cal ammo is a good bargain. That is not to say it can't and is not being used to perforate our fellow humans ;)

The Dragunov is used by a whole lot more armed forces and groups other than Spetznaz and the Indian Army. By modern standards it falls in the average category and stuff like H&K PSG1s and the like can out shoot it pretty easily.

That is not to condemn the Dragunov as a washout- Rather consider it what the AK47 is to an M16.... robust, simple and adequately accurate.

regards,
cc

well the accurate part is with match ammo something the armed forces dont get.
it is basically an attempt to give a squad better accuracy and reach. kicks like hell though.

Actually nither one is the 'best sniper rifle in the world.

The most accurate sniper rifle mass produced is the DSR-1, followed by the likes of the TRG 42 and the AI-AW.

The Dragunov strictly speaking isnt even accurate, and yes the .50 Barrett can make hits on Human Sized targets at 1000 yards or more. The Dragunov is at best a 2 MoA rifle, and might break 1 MoA once in a while. 1 MoA is approximately 5 shots in 1 inch center to center at 100 yards.

When you do start getting into precision shooting one quickly realises, that Sniper rifles while accurate in the sense that they can hit a 20x20 inch target at long ranges, doing so isnt difficult. Getting a 5 shot 4 inch group at 1000 is a whole different ball game.

Ask me how I know?

I havent had a chance to go shoot this year. Been to the range only once to test my 7.62x39 loads. They work, and hit the target that is about it.
