I am surprised to see that our own IOF is selling 7.62 Assult rifle saying its there product I dont think they got any TOT from Kalashnikov I checked with Kalashnikov site and found the specs are almost same and its basically and Indian version of AK-47 (1949) versions. Thank god this time they dont use the term INSAS
I still beleive that it will be better than DARA made AK-47 or from INSAS in terms of performance only thing I didn't get that why they switch over to 7.62 instead of 5.56 NATO
anyway check out this links

Finally the boys at DRDO decided not to reinvent the wheel.
This thing was in the works for a couple of years now.
With the imported stock of AK's fast wearing down a replacement was needed. The security personnel preferred the AK to the underpowered (for urban combat) INSAS.
This time the Babus did the smart thing. A deal was stuck with the Russians, for a limited production run of the AK's.
From what I read last year, the Russians will provide the tooling and tech.. IOF will run a 2 year production run of upto 200,000 rifles. India will not be allowed to export these guns.
Finally a First rate Army gets locally made decent guns, unless IOF screws up the production end!!

Better late than never...for argument sake if there was choice what would be recommendation for INSAS's replacement .
My opinion Steyr, HK G 36 http://world.guns.ru/assault/as14-e.htm
AN 94
http://world.guns.ru/assault/as08-e.htm
whichever is their equivalent model.
The bull pop Travor bought from Israel for special forces has mixed reviews.
Cheers
