Don't buy it, let me do that! :D Would depend on the shape it is in, some that I have seen in India are really beat up.

Anuvid,

W.J. Jefferey was a top notch gun maker and a rifle by them is worthy to be anyone's collection.Depends what you want and depends on the information you can provide on the rifle, say pictures, serial number etc.All the very best with the purchase.Have the rifle checked by a competent(I know it's like the proverbial needle in the hay barn). Look for any rust anywhere, cracks in the stock, the bore, condition of the rifling, take apart the bolt etc.More you tell us the more we can tell you.

Best-
Vikram

the jeffery's im talking about is a very rarely used weapon. the owner only fired it on dusshera/diwali..the stock doesnt have any cracks, only a hint of rust n the barrel, the serial no and other info is still legible, overall about 80 %. i am just scepticle because i havent seen many people talk or use jeffery's these days.. ofcourse oldies bet their b..ls on jeffery's.

Jeffery was a quality gun maker and I am sure if maintained it will be serviceable for another hundred years, and by that time will be worth quite a bit more than what price you will have paid for it.

Congratulations on your new to you gun, and be sure to post up some pictures when you bring it home!

There are a number of gun makers with names like Jeffrey, Jeffries, Jefferies etc. Some even came out of Belgium with Belgium proof marks, so make sure you buy what you think you are buying. Any of them could make a very nice gun but I am assuming you are talking about W.J Jeffery & Co.

W.J Jeffery is credited with the creation of 600 Nitro Express, 404 Jeffery, 333 Jeffery, 400 Jeffery, 500 Jeffery (originally 12.5x70 Schuler, If I am not mistaken), 225 Rook etc. This in itself speaks volumes of where W.J Jeffery stands as far as guns & shooting is concerned.

Make sure its a W.J. Jeffery & Co with one of the following addresses and Birmingham or London proof marks.

60 Queen Victoria Street (1890)
13 King Street (1898)
26 Bury Street (1914)
9 Golden Square(1927)
5B Pall Mall (1955)
1959 - Acquired by Holland & Holland
2000- Name acquired by J. Roberts from H & H

Their current web site is http://www.jroberts-gunmakers.co.uk/makers/wjj.htm and they make high end shotgun & double rifles with prices starting @ 20000 - 30000 Pounds. Bolt rifles start @ 5500 pounds.

Good luck with your purchase and please share some pictures.

Herb

You,you, lucky devil! That is a beautiful rifle and anyone will be proud to have it in their possession.I am really happy you found a superb piece of gun history. Now, take good care of the rifle.Read a lot on how to clean, and not over do it, and maintain a rifle. It should last another 100 years.

Congratulations.

..and by nice 'manitenance job' it should mean a proper one. It should not be a misdirected effort to 'restore' it to NIB condition... which is so often the case.

Congtrats on a great rifle. When you clean it up, get some talcum powder on the maker ,serial no and other engravings on the metal, it will stand out clearly, get some more pics. You can also write to the current owners of the WJ Jeffery name and they can run a search for you, and mail you a 'pedigree' letter. Will make intresting reading.
You certainly have struck gold, take good care of it
