What do you consider as the best medium calibre centrefire rifle cartridge? This is to be taken in context with our current 3 license limit, which means most of us are in the position of choosing just one such rifle which we'll probably end up using for pretty much everything... Lets hear what you think and why?
Cheers!

7mm-08 would be a good choice. It has very good ballistics, and is an accurate round. There is a wide selection of bullets weights to choose from to meet most requirements, a selection which gets even larger if one is inclined to handload. Its flat trajectory makes long range shooting easier. Also its recoil is quite tame which makes long shooting sessions a bit more comfortable.

In my opinion .30-06_Springfield. Not sure, if our IOF is .30-06 uses .30-06 Springfield cartridge.

Definitely agree with Herb.
First choice: .375 H&H. It's a classic medium bore, and one of the most versatile calibers. Factory loads available between 275 gr and 300 gr.
The other option as Herb already said is the 30 aught 6. Powerful, available, and versatile.
"f I could have two cartridges to hunt the world, I'd be quite happy with the .30-06 and the .375 H&H. And if I could have just one cartridge to hunt the world over, my only answer is the .375." -- Craig Boddington, "Classic Hunting Cartridges: .375 Holland & Holland Magnum," Petersen's HUNTING, June 1995, p. 43 (emphasis in original).

In india the .30-06 or the 7.62x57
Otherwise the .260 will keep up with .338 lapua to 1K. Provided you're rolling your own.
I believe Lapua is introducing brass... but havent seen any.
.7-08... barrel burner. A decent barrel will give you about 1K through it before begining to degrade. Would much rather shoot a .300 WM with slightly higher recoil.
Want the most inherrently accurate cartridge? 6 PPC or 6 XTC. Caliber wise it is midway.. case size... depends on what you consider mid sized.

30.06 gets the job done in every area.

if it is just one cartridge, 30/06 any day. Great ballistics, inherently accurate, wide range of bullet weights - 55 grains to 220 grains (Heard there is a 240 grains bullet)-high sectional density, relatively milder recoil , relatively cheap ammo, easy availability, not a barrel burner, you can take from rabbit to,if properly placed, an elephant- the list can go on.There simply is no other medium bore calibre that can out match the 30/06. The .375 H&H really is not a medium bore.It sits on the border between medium and large bores.JMHO.
If I were to pick another calibre, it's the 6.5X55 Swede.
Best-
Vikram

all depends on what you wanna do with it, if its competition shooting then the 6.5 caliber on a necked down 30-06 case will do very nicely with its high BC bullets .500+, but it can be a barrel burner.

Looks like the .30-06 is leading the poll.

1) 30-06
2) .270
3) 8x57
4) 7x57
5) Up to 300 yards IOF .315
Ammo is easily available for all these calibres,a major consideration when buying a rifle

I'll say this is a good list. The 25-06 is a nice round too. The 375 isn't a medium bore, as it is the minimum caliber for shooting elephants and such in Africa.

I am also "tempted" with 30.06 provided IOF will sell at reasonable rate & of course if I get "The License"
