Hello members, good day to U all. I would like you to give your valuable opinion regarding a BSA rifle, that I'm interested in purchasing. I have been offered a used BSA 0.22 LR. This rifle has a 10 catridge magazine in the form of extension tube below the barrel. The chamber, crown & the bore are in excellent condition. The guy is demanding 40k for this. The exterior is not well maintained though. The butt is original with BSA etched in it. the sling holders are missing. It is a bolt action rifle, which can also be cocked by pulling the knob which acts as SAFE when turned to right. If anyone has used/ know about this knid of rifle, please update me about the rifle. Thanking You all, in anticipation of your good advise.

a friend of mine in dehradun has a similar weapon.
it is good but indian made(KF) carts cause problems in the tubular magzine.if you will use mini-magnum or winchester express,it will work well.
price quoted is fine.

Hi shooter169,

The price seems good and its OK as long as the bore/crown are good and the mechanism is not butchered.try to cycle a few rounds of KF and imported ammo and you will get a fair idea of its reliability.any good gunsmith can refinish the gun to your taste.i personally handled remington rifles with tubular mags and never had a problem with KF ammo.

You are probably looking at a BSA Sportsman Ten. It was made by The Birmingham Small Arms Company, Birmingham, England in the year 1949 and 1950. A total of 9854 pieces were made in this model and It was quickly replaced by BSA Sportsman Fifteen which was produced in much larger numbers. The Sportsman Fifteen is perhaps the most successful .22 caliber sporting rifle ever produced by BSA . However, since the Sportsman Ten was made in smaller numbers, it easily becomes a rarer piece as compared to the Sportsman Fifteen. Both these models have a tubular magazine. The rifle with a larger capacity magazine became more popular for obvious reasons. The tubular magazine is trouble free and looks good too.

If you are happy with the barrel and the action , 40K is a reasonable deal. One can always restore the ORIGINAL stock. Just imagine, what fun you will have trying to restore the present stock to its original factory condition.

I hope you post some "pre" and "post" restoration pictures.

BSA Sportsman 10. I have a Sportsman15 with me now for bluing.

Pretty simple and straight forward gun. Flimsy rear sights. Not so nice trigger design. Often wobbly bolt.

If you are planning to procure this gun, remember you can't mount a scope in the normal sense. You'll have to somehow procure or fabricate a side mount...

Otherwise okey-dokey plinker.

Hi Guys, I just finished shooting about 20 catr. I just happened to be on paper after about 5 shots. With the 8th one i'm hitting the black. After the 13th one i'm now consistently in the black with nice grouping. The KF ammo works really well. No holdups, absolutely fine cycling. The problem is only with Eley catridges. They dont lift up enough to get loaded. I have to move them up with a key. So as of now the KF is King. Will be sending it soon for bluing & mounting of scope. I have a Bushnell & Simmons. Bushnell is 3#9-38, Simmons is 3#9-32, Simmons is a bit heavier but shorter. Can someone tell me which is preferable? I prefer to have a mount which can easily be removed & reattached without disturbing the alignment much, as I'll be participating regularly in sport. Will send pics soon.

Since the stock was designed for open sight use only, it is preferable to use a scope that sits as low as possible without it hindering the operation of the bolt.

...also, the BSA bolt/receiver design does not allow for scopes to be mounted in the conventional sense. You'll need to have the rails fabricated...either a plain inverted "L" side mounted bracket or a cantilever type with a sturdy front base.

The rail/cantilever will still have to be mounted high because the shoulder of the bolt cycles on a slot on the top of the receiver.

Please advice me of a way to install a scope on such a rifle, because I own one and want a scope on it desperately!
