Rare 8-Bore Holland & Holland Hammer Single Barrel Rifle
Serial no. 12068. 8-bore. 26-inch steel barrel with spear front sight on a dove-tailed base. Fixed rear sight on base. Four-inch flat on top of barrel at rear marked: Holland & Holland / 98 New Bond Street, London. Rifling showing about a 1/4 turn in the length of the barrel. Case-hardened break-open action with Jones' underlever locking system. Percussion fence. Backaction rebounding lock on the right side. Action and lock engraved with bold foliate scroll showing 60-70% coverage. Extractor. Checkered pistolgrip stock of figured walnut with case-hardened grip cap with foliate scroll details. Sling eyes. Later Silver's style recoil pad. Wedge- fastened splinter fore-end with horn tip.
Condition: Excellent, as refinished. Barrel shows 99% reblued finish with small areas of older pitting under fore-end. Bright bore with excellent rifling. Action shows 98% vibrant recased colors. Five small pits on breech face filled with solder. Hammer shows some indentations. Reblued triggerguard shows 99% finish. Stock shows older refinish with some raised grain. Metal is slightly proud of wood at the head of the stock. Stock shows a few light nicks and some handling marks. Fore-end shows an impression in the checkering and a few light handling marks. Refreshed checkering.
