A dealer was trying to sell a Winchester lever action in 45-90(no ammo) saying that he had about 100 rounds of ammunition of another calibre which could be made to fire in this rifle by slightly altering the chamber(Vishal Arms, Manimajra).
penpusher that would be the 45-70 in Winchester lever action. How much was the dope peddling it for?

Dev,
The caliber of the Winchester was 45-90.Did not ask him about the price as had no interest in the rifle.
If you want to go this way, better get a .405 Winchester lever action.Ammo is pricey but you can get it from time to time 30-30 rifles usually sell for Rs.45,000/- and ammo is not a problem.Try to get a Marlin 30-30.They are in a generally better condition than the Winchesters and you can mount a scope on one with ease.I am looking for a Savage 99 in 30-30 but have not found one so far.A Colt Lightning in 44-40 is another option. However the ammo is almost double the price for a 30-30

Just despo ya, love the way the lever sounds. Normally there is a lot of reading material on the Marlin 45-70 that was used by the buffalo hunters and so I'm sure I'm mistaking the 45 -90 winchester for the Marlin 45-70. The marlin 45-70 rounds are being manufactured by Hornady under the leverevolution brand name.
Will prollay have to stick to the daisy red rider instead of a real lever action rifle.

Why a Savage 99 ?
I`ve seen more Savage 99s in .303 Savage than in 30-30............and the .303 Savage is NOT the same as the .303 British, nor is it interchangable.
Get a Browning BLR and you have the choice of several more powerful cartridges than the 30-30 - such as the 30-06 and .300 Win Mag. The BLR is a lever action with bolt locking similar to a bolt action......and with the strength and accuracy of a bolt action. It utilises a flush mounted box magazine which allows the use of pointed bullets.
I`d love a lightweight takedown BLR but have never seen one in the UK - they aren`t currently imported and possibly never have been. I do know of a non-takedown BLR in 30-06 but that has a straight grip.
Any Winchester 45-90 will be a model 1886 and built prior to 1919. Quite a valuable rifle ( possibly a very valuable rifle ) ..... especially if in good condition. The odds are that it was intended for use with the 45-90 Black powder cartridge. The 1886 is strong......but if intended for black powder I wouldn`t risk a nitro load. I`m pretty certain that the rifle could handle a nitro load but wouldn`t want to risk such a nice rifle.
The 45-70 will chamber quite happily - and safely - in a rifle chambered for the 45-90 - subject to the caveat above.
The `buffalo hunter` 45-70 was the original black powder version. Same case dimensions as the nitro 45-70 but making a lot less energy.
So by `slightly altering the chamber` the dealer could persuade ammo of another calibre to fit. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.........and a load of B-S.
45-70 ammo is made by several manufacturers. Hornadys `Leverevolution` ammo is just loaded slightly hotter and has a more ballistically efficient bullet with a pointed polymer tip.

A Savage 99 because it looks nice. Also buying a Winchester/Marlin in 30-30 is very easy.I like searching for things
Better still would be a bolt action 30-30.
Also a 30-30 because it would be for about 45-50,000/- while a 30-06 would be for 1,50,000/- to 4,00,000/-.I have come across Savage 99's in 250-3000 or Savage 300 alone.Though I did see one in .308.
I have not come across a Browning BLR so far.
I did not see the Winchester 45-90.Just talked to the dealer over the phone. So can't comment on it's condition.Did see a Winchester 405 with an octagonal barrel and good engraving. Was for sale for 30,000/- But this was some years back

Why a bolt action 30-30 ?
There have been bolt action 30-30s but none of them have been very succesful - if you ( anyone ) wants a bolt action .30 cal it makes more sense to use a more powerful cartridge such as the 30-06. One of the problems with using a rimmed cartridge in a box type magazine that was not specifically designed for them is that feeding can often be a pain.
Winchester chambered their M54 for the 30-30 many years ago - had a reputation for being very accurate but was a commercial failure. Since then Remington have chambered the M788 in the calibre and Savage have produced bolt action 30-30s. I`ve only ever seen one bolt action 30-30 rifle in the UK.
You would have to reload as otherwise you are limited to the round nosed lever action commercial ammunition - or the plastic tipped Hornady LeveRevolution.
No, a bolt action .30-30 doesn`t make much sense.
Don`t misunderstand me - I like the 30-30 but it is a lever action calibre with considerably less power and range than the 30-06.

Grumpy,
Read my post about the purchase price of a 30-30 and a 30-06 rifle in India.30-30 Rs. 45-50,000/-.30-06 Rs. 1,50,000/- to 4,50,000/-Huge difference. Also a paper target will never be able to distinguish between the 2

So why not get a lever action 30-30 instead ? Without handloading you won`t be able to take advantage of the accuracy potential of a bolt action 30-30 and there is always the problem of feeding jams.

A bolt action 30-30 or a Savage 99 because of the limited ammo choice in the country and these 2 would give me the opportunity to use what ever I get, including spitzer bullets.Since I have not come across any one of them so far,in all probability any 30-30 rifle that I buy would be a lever action Winchester or Marlin

No logic to that because no-one makes ammo with a spitzer bullet in 30-30.
The Hornady LeveRevolution might have a pointed plastic nose but it is by no means a spitzer.
Ahhijeet/penpusher why not lift this 30-30 thread and present it under a new topic heading ?
Don`t think this 30-30 thread is `OT` by the way - just irrelevent to the IOF .315 topic.

Oh stop being such a wuss penpusher.
Stand up and fight your corner.
I like the 30-30 and appreciate the technical excellence of the Savage 99. I think it`s ugly but that doesn`t detract from the fact that it`s the second best lever action rifle ever made ( after the BLR. )
And it`s not my fault that no-one makes 30-30 ammo with spitzer type bullets ! As I said, you`ld have to reload.
