30-06 or 22 LR…advice requested

Dear learned members of IFG,
After a bit long time I have returned to our IFG site. Earlier I used to come here almost daily. Gave me a good knowledge about guns. But somehow I got off the grid. Must make it a habit of visiting IFG atleast few times a week to keep me updated.
Coming to the point, I am a shotgun shooter and got Renowned cert this year and the process to import a Beretta DT11 EELL is ongoing. Am starting to develop interest in rifle shooting. Not taking the rifle shooting seriously because my shotgun shooting has already taken a lot from my office time. Just a passion to shoot rifle.
I request our esteemed members to suggest me whether I should go for a 22 rifle or a 30-06 rifle. Regarding 30-06 I am afraid I ll be having an over powered weapon more than my need and I rarely have place to shoot. Regarding 22 I feel like I ll be having a mouse rifle, not enough power in my hand and bit worried about the ricochet…anyway I am not going to participate in any competition..just a passion to own a rifle and may be some time trying out the rifle..
30-06 - more expensive cartridge, little shooting and feel the power
Or
22 LR - least expensive and readily available cartridge, more shooting, plinking and just the feel of owning a rifle..
Which one should I choose..
May any cartridge be should I go for IOF or second hand imported rifle? Since I want to have the feel of owning a fine rifle, I can’t pull myself back from spending a little more extra money.
Thank u and best regards
Vijay

.22 would be a better choice for you. And yes imported second hand rifles would be good provided it is inspected and tested before purchasing. Looking at the ammo cost and availability and as you mentioned lack of space go with .22lr

Here, you have a dilemma.
The 22 is cheap to shoot a lot, but if you are concentrating on your shotgun, you may not have much time to shoot the 22. However, it is economical to shoot and has little recoil.
But as you are used to shotguns, you may not find recoil an issue, and you may long to shoot the 30-06 and enjoy a full power rifle. If you don't have much time to shoot something other than your shotgun, popping of some 30-06 may not be that much of a cost issue.
How well rarely having a place to shoot a 30-06 may or may not fit with how often you can do it.
So, yo have to figure out what fits best with your shooting opportunities, the cost, and the availability of places to shoot.
One more thing to add is what would you like to have. I think it's perfectly reasonable to have a gun just because you want it, and for no other reason. So, the joy of ownership may fit one rifle over another.
It seems to me that your problem is that you have too many personal preferences at odds with each other, and you will need to see which priorities will take precedence. You have two good choices, so when you weigh them against each other, which one comes out on top?
Resale value might make a difference to you, as well, so that if you change your mind, which one is easier to sell to buy something else.
Too bad that you can't buy both and settle things!

If your going to be shooting within 40 to 50 yards then a good air rifle with a good scope is good enough although it's not in your list of weapons you mentioned

If you ask me, I'll say go for the 30-06. Since you'll be only shooting once in a while, cost won't be a huge factor. You're used to shooting shotguns so recoil won't be anything new to you. It kicks, but so does a 12 gauge.
At least you'll get the feel of a real big bore rifle whenever you shoot at the range.
If you're thinking of plinking and do have a place for that and are thinking of doing this regularly, the 22 makes sense.
Otherwise, bite the bullet and get the full horsepower rifle.
Imagine working the bolt to get a 30-06 round into the chamber... Dang!!! Also, imagine the bang and the kick to the shoulder.. open the bolt, breathe in the smoke..mmmm hmmmm.. that'll be a fun Sunday if you ask me.

Another advantage of 22 rifle is that it can be used by any age group a 10 year old kid or a 100 year old person since it's light in weight and almost no recoil.

Dear members,
Thank you all for your overwhelming response..another point I forgot to mention.I already have a .177 Airarms S510 air rifle with me. Also, planning to exchange it for FX mk3 which is more versatile and can be modified too..
In such case, which rifle will suit me the best?? 22LR or 30-06??
Thank you all for the response once again

Hi,
I suppose you have shot both rifles. If I were lucky enough to be in your shoes, I would have gone for the 30-06...(just my personal choice). Go with the one that gives you satisfaction. Hope, you could get both.
Regards.

If you have the open and safe area to shoot a 30-06, and no complaints from the public, you can go for 30-06 rifle. If your open and safe area is small, go for .22 . But always be careful with any rifle . the bullets of both can travel upto 2 KM . Watch your background. .22 is a cheap allrounder.

The fact is both 22 and 30 06 are totally different weapons there is no comparison. A 22 cannot give you the experience a 30 caliber rifle will give and both are designed for different purposes.
There are people who hardly fire their big bore rifles but still are happy just having them in their possession.

Thank you all for the valuable inputs you have provided me..As of now I have decided to apply for a rifle licence immediately after I receive my shotgun import..and I have decided to go for 30-06..
The shooting club which I am associated with will be buying few 22 rifle for us members to shoot in the range..so I will be having opportunity to shoot 22 rifle..
And I will be having a more powerful rifle with me just for the feel and satisfaction of having one..and shoot the same twice or thrice in a year..
Two of our members recommended to go for both..but I like to keep the arms count to the minimum..that way it will be more comfortable in maintaining the guns and less burden for me to show the weapon for police check now and then .
Thank you all for the reply
