I think of India somewhat in the same sense as I do the Soviet Union/Russia when it comes to military rifles: how does one effectively arm a large army at a reasonable cost? This is especially important when one considers possible battlefield opponents, which may rule out having a small army. The prospective rifle also needs to operate from the hot desert to the highest Himalayas. Despite all of the advancements in small arms, the AK platform does still seem 9to me, at least) offer a lot of plusses.
I've just watch Ian's video on this Slovenian AK modification -- it can be a new rifle or be applied to an existing AK. It looks like it's well thought-out. Also, the idea that the company couldn't find a source of receivers wouldn't seem like a problem: Certainly, these could be made in India at a reasonable price.
