Indians For Guns

Hi! This is a long shot but I have a double rifle 500/465 from according to H&H in London was made for the Army & Navy stores - Bombay branch.
Thats about it. The serial number on mine is 32081 and I have found several rifles in close number to mine like:

This was also sold by Army & Navy to a Maharaja.

The Glasgow University hold the ledgers for Army & Navy London branch but they don't seem to find anything on my rifle because it was sold by the Bombay/Mumbai branch? Anyone know if someone hold the ledgers from A/N Bombay branch ? OR can help me with this serial number ?

I would love to find out the first owner

Hi, Army and Navy stores were closed shortly after Independence. Probably in 1948/49. Almost all the brach were closed there operation simultaneously which includes Mumbai, kolkata, Ranchi, Shimla New Delhi.
Their property was sold to different parties at that time.
One best thing is, Bombay/ Mumbai store property was propably purchased by Tata's.
You can send mail to Tata archives. With luck you can get something from there.

Sorry to mention, try with Tata central Archives. They have their history section well maintained and have records from 1898 and old.

May I ask you another favour shivaji!

I have sent them 3 emails by no answer and called them twice but no one seems to speak English. Is it possible for you to ask them In your language. If they hold the ledger or not.

Hi Anton, to the best information I got from Tata Archives, they have some documents and probably some photographs on the Acquisition of Army navy store Mumbai but the details about the material is not sure. If you are not in hurry then next month my colleague is going to pune for some official purpose, I can request him for a check.

Hi Allan. I am extremely sorry that I have missed your post. I have made several contact to tata archives pune and Tata office Mumbai but till date not able to get any proper details from them.
When one of my known reached to Pune archive then he get a reply that Tata purchased the above mentioned property in Mumbai but not run that business any more. Archive is not sure about the documents of previous business. Though they said that they will try to get any information if possible
It's again a fault on my part that due to my own schedule I have missed the follow up with them. Today it self I will try to reach them if there is any info.
