hi everybody....i wish to purchase a new rifle but unsure of caliber.i request your advice and opinions between 30.06 and 7mm rem magnum.i reside in canada and game will be bear,moose and deer

30 06,very versatile,you wil be able to pick up game at greater ranges,just my .02 $

thanks sanjay .i wanted a new rifle coz i missed a nice buck this month.i was using a friends .22 hornet and missed at 100+yards.got hit and still escaped

7mm rem mag will reduce your flexibility of bullet weight choice-probably between 125 to 175 grains;maybe a little light for a big moose, or a bear,which you obviously would want to stop dead! A 30-06 would afford you a choice ranging from 110 to 220 grains;so would a.308.Happy shooting.

Either calibre should be fine, so try both and see which one you are more comfortable with. The .30 Springfield would be cheaper to buy and would be my initial choice if I were in your place.

For Grizzly bear, I would probably opt for .375 H&H.

I think you need to learn hunting ethics before you go out hunting again. Shooting at a buck at 100+ yards with a .22 Hornet is just plain wrong.

HI! I think Rustom is being too polite here To put it in proper perspective it CRIMINAL . Please do take care to at least learn about range, shot placement and bullet caliber before shooting at another animal and needlessly injuring it to go and suffer needlessly.

Like others have suggested, the 30-06 is much more versatile, you'll find lots of ammo and different bullets for different game. You can reload much easier too. I went thru this same decision the last month and decided on the 30-06. It has a nice "ring" to it too

I bought a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless last week in 30-06, shot 180 gr Remington Core-Lokts thru, its a great rifle. Tikka gives 1MOA guarantee for 3shots. You will not be disappointed.

thanks everybody for the replies...i normally use my .303 for deer but took a hornet that day and couldnt judge the distance as it was last few mins of shooting time..it was afault anyway

Indian, ethics aside, your friend is probably breaking Canadian hunting laws by using that calibre on deer. It can be done at shorter ranges with two types of shot placement but it's not something one wants to mention in public, lest an unqualified hunter mucks up the shot and injures the animal.

centrefire calibers are legal in canada but 22 calibers r prohibited in u s.cant even use a 22/250

Was feeling bad about the wounded deer. Did you even try to see where it went, track after it etc. I apologize for going on, as you have been chastised by the other members but its just so wrong to do what you did. The minimum requirement for deer in most places is a .243.

I am sure that you know better now.

any centrefire is legal for whitetail deer in ontario,where i live.but i think that this topic is going too far

Whats wrong with the .303 you have? Enough for any deer or bear-short of grizzly, but then its shot placement too...
