hi guys..an elderly friend of mine offered me his winchester 30-30 rifle(price not yet fixed).what r your ideas on that caliber.i already have some guns(pics in photo album forum).waiting for your replies

All depends on what you intend shooting with it. Out side of Indian Union, of course. The caliber is ok for game weighing bet. 130-180 Lbs. at medium ranges e.i. till 150 Yds/mtrs. A good bush buster.The most popular model being Winchester 1894 lever action which is rugged and handy as well due to its over all short length in MHO.Ammo may not be a problem where you live I guess.

The 30-30 is a nice calibre to shoot.......easy on the shoulder and doesn`t make a load of noise/blast PROVIDING that it isn`t one of the older lever action rifles with a lot of drop in the stock making the rifle useless for scope mounting and amplifying the perceived recoil.
The cartridge isn`t exactly a powerhouse so the range of game that it can be used on is limited - Mule Deer being about the largest quarry that can sensibly be taken with the 30-30 ..... and it`s not ideal for those. It`s not a Caribou/Elk, Moose, Bear calibre. Hornadys new LeveRevolution ammunition increases the 30-30s power and range by a worthwhile amount and can be recommended.
If you want a rifle that is more versatile and can be used for those larger animals you need to get something like a 30-06 or .300 Win Mag.

What is the make and model of rifle?

For deer and up to 150 yards, and black bear up to about 90 yards it is an acceptable cartridge.

It is generally accepted that the 30-30 has killed more deer in the USA than any other cartridge, so there are no issues using the cartridge on game.

Now, the other factor is the actual rifle. I have a Winchester 94 that is one of my favorite "walking around" rifles, very nice and light and easy to carry and has acceptable accuracy up to about 90 yards. However, in the shape it is in I would never take a 150 yard shot at anything as I most likely would not hit it. They can be accurized but I haven't done anything to mine yet. If you are looking at a 94, unless you are doing something like "cowboy action shooting" it is not a target gun at all. However, if it is something like a savage 340 you can get it to shoot very accurately.

hi..its a win model 94 and guy fired less than a 100 rounds.it is in mint condition.the province which i live in canada(ontario)is a thick bush country and shots are placed below 100 yards.more than that range is rare

That's a perfect "carrying-around" rifle for your neck of the woods.

Does anyone have 30.30 underlever win rifle,how much is the market price going on for this rifle in India.Can we get ammo for this.
