Sharing some pics for 30-06 fans. Winchester model 70 supergrade....although the original rifleman's rifle I think was a lever 1892.























Definitely has a better classic profile than my Browning.

Herb, that is a beauty! I suspect that "rifleman's rifle" is a bit of advertising hype, which doesn't take away from the beautiful rifle you are showing here.

BTW, my brother had an old Model 70 Featherweight in 308. It is somewhat older than the rifle in your pics and is not beautifully and tastefully engraved like yours, but the enjoyment of something well made and finished is truly a pleasure to experience!

Herb, the 1892 is a wonderful rifle, and its nice "feel" is supplied by that genius John M Browning and enhanced by its chamberings in what are essentially handgun cartridges. I would love to have an 1892 chambered in 357, myself! Still, the Model 70 is nothing to sneeze at and it was made at a time when quality was taken for granted.

Note to Farook: if you compare the price of something IOF makes to a rifle like this, you can multiply the price 4x or 5x, because this sort of quality is not obtained cheaply, in any market. Just because something costs more does not make it nicer, but it is rare that something that is really nice costs less or even the same as an ordinary product made for the mass market. This kind of rifle Herb shows here always has cost more than the more ordinary products of other gun makers, which is why Winchester stopped making them a long time ago, and re-introduced them as a specialty product.

Interesting you picture Robert Ruark's book. As I recall, Ruark shot a Cape Buffalo with a 30-06. Guess he felt it was enough gun . . .

Obviously, but the whole Indian gun market is inflated. As long as imports cannot be obtained, this price disparity will be the case. Were these imports to be allowed, IOF would either compete with products of similar quality on a price basis or quickly go out of business. If they chose to come out with a premium product, it would also be similarly priced.

However, if they came out with a premium product like this Model 70 today, with import restrictions in place, it would be priced light years above what they offer today, of that you can be sure.

My point is, the problem is not that IOF does not produce such a premium rifle, it is that they have no incentive to do so with the current import restrictions.

Its a beautifull rifle Herb.... honestly i would like to wash my hand... wear gloves...... & with raised BP....... with hawk eyes.....see to it that no immortal touches it (Indian Context)

Hi Farook,simple principle of supply & demand,here IOF is the King of all he surveys,no competition,whatever crap they put out in the market at whatever price has to be acceptable,no questions asked,so when we pay about the equivalent USD 1500 for PISTOL/REVOLVER,it is supposed to be received like IOF is doing us a favor.Best Amit

Glad you folks liked the pictures and the gun, I always liked the Winchester Model 70's.

Vikram - I haven't shot the rifle yet, not because it is pretty or anything but because I am too lazy. Since most of current production rifles don't come with open sights, I have to first mount a scope, zero and then find a load that will shoot well in this particular gun.I have a couple of of 30-06's including a Model 70 pre-64 made in 1953 which I enjoy shooting. I will probably shoot this gun one of these days.

Farook - I understand your frustration with the Indian market for guns. Like Timmy and others mentioned demand & supply determines prices in an open market. In a market like the one you have in India there is no rational for the prices. I remember the days when one had to pay deposit & wait 6-10 years to buy a two wheeler (Bajaj Chetak) before the market was opened to foreign players. A used Remington 700 in 30-06 which costs around $650 in North America will cost INR 400000+ ($7000+) in India. IOF does not sell the volumes that Winchester or Remington does, even if they can build a rifle like this it will be a bad business decision because they will not be able the recoup the investment in tooling, skills etc. based on the numbers they will sell because of the firearm licensing situation in India.

This particular 75th anniversary rifle was made only in 2012 and is not currently manufactured, in a couple of years the only option will be to buy one used and the price depends on what the seller is asking and what the buyer is willing to pay. It could be $1000 or $3000. It will depend on the particular rifle including condition, wood grade etc..
