HK G36: The main Assault Rifle used by the German army today.

The Heckler & Koch G36 is a 5.56×45mm assault rifle, designed in the early 1990s by Heckler & Koch (H&K) in Germany as a replacement for the 7.62mm G3 battle rifle. It was accepted into service with the Bundeswehr in 1997, replacing the G3. The G36 is gas-operated and feeds from a 30-round detachable box magazine or 100-round C-Mag drum magazine.

Note that the standard G36 has six vents in the handguard (see top photo). The G36K (Kurz=short) has four vents in the handguard and the G36C (Compact) has two vents in the handguard. The basic shape of the handguard is pretty much the same in all variants. The length and number of vents in the handguard can be used as an identifying aid to the different variants. Also note the different carry-handle/optics combinations on the two rifles above.

This is just a brief introduction to the G36 and the next post will lead into my interest in the rifle.

While taking CK Kalyan to the Twin Cities to catch his flight back to Canada, we stopped at Cabelas. Cabelas is about halfway to Minneapolis/St Paul from my house.

While there I happened on a chassis for my Ruger 10/22. As I have two of them, I was interested in "modding" one of them to look like something else. The Chassis is the Archangel "Nomad" (formerly called the Archangel "Marauder"). It represents an HK G36 EBR (Evil Black Rifle = Assault Rifle.)

Unfortunately, as you'll note, the kit is neither fish nor fowl (at least when combined with my rifle).
The handguard is typical of a G36K and the carry handle/sight rail is typical of a G36C

The stock 10/22 carbine. Mine has an 18 1/2" barrel. If I had the 16 inch barrel, I could have pulled off a G36K with flash hider. Then I would run into the issue of the rifle being less than 26" with the stock folded and this would have been against the law, so I would have had to pin the flash hider on permanently.

The carbine assembled with the flash hider. The barrel is several inches too long for a G36K and the carry handle is incorrect for the K variant. However, HK carry handles are interchagable so it is possible that a rifle could have either carry handle.

I was at my Local Gun Shop today and found a great deal on a Vortex Sparq red dot sight so I mounted that.

I guess I'll just have to settle for a G36C (kinda) using the fake silencer to represent the shorter barrel.

A single point sling mounted with a push button sling adapter.
It does have metal inserts in the sling points for this very purpose. The front hand-stop sling point at the forward edge of the handguard is also metal.
Note also the two points for mounting additional Picatinny Rails on the handguard (both sides)

Conclusions:
The chassis is made out of a carbon fiber reinforced polymer and is very rigid. It is well built, cradles the rifle tightly (there are no rattles), The barrel is free floating in the hand guard. It is probably a pound or a pound and a half heavier than the carbine by itself. It looks like shooting this will be a lot of fun.

I'm not looking for a target rifle as I already have one of those. I'm looking for something to plink with. Something that looks a little different but still has the Ruger 10/22's reliability and basic accuracy. I haven't shot it yet but I think I'm going to go out and buy some more .22 LR ammo; a lot of it. I'm looking to have fun. Isn't that what a hobby should be?

Love the evil transformation. It is possible to go thru a lot of ammo with the ruger and even more so when zombie cans attack .

Nice kit xl..I love G 36 rifles have a feeling pakistan will opt for it although AK seems to be standard for both armies. Read recently Indian army is going again for rifle change and its not in 5.56 either..

As I found out when I took it to the range, it eats ammo like a kindergartner eats candy.
You're quite correct, I think this is going to get expensive.

I took it to the range and there was a guy with an AR15 lookalike in .22LR. In fact, since the AR15 is so popular here, there are a lot of AR15 .22 LR clones out there.
I wanted something a little bit different. The real HK36 makes extensive use of polymer so this rifle looks pretty authentic.

Baljit, the kit has an MSRP of approx $200. However, when we went to the Ahlman's show, the Cabelas booth was giving out $20 discount coupons. CK very generously gave me his and I was able to get it on sale for $159-$20=$139. I had problems with the first couple of magazine fulls and I had magazine seating issues (user error...duh!). Once I figured out how to seat the mag properly, it ran like a swiss watch. I had a brick with me and ran all 500 rounds out in one session! Once I got it going, I couldn't stop. . The instructions talk about the magazine springs getting settled after a few rounds through it. After the first two or three magazine fulls, it ran flawlessly and it would empty the entire magazine out without any issues, as fast as I could pull the trigger.

My range report

As I said, I had initial magazine seating issues. the mag fit is tight. In fact the whole kit fits in the chassis very tightly. Because it fit so tightly, I was concerned that the accuracy of the gun would be compromised. So when I got there, I set up some target spots on a piece of cardboard at 25 yards and sighted the gun in. The kit's stock iron sights interfered with the view through the Vortex Sparq so I removed them. Besides that, the front blade on the iron sights was so thick that it would have precluded any target work. I suppose it would be fine for general plinking and fast target acquisition. The rear sight is a two position peep sight and is adjustable for windage and elevation. The front sight is a blade in a circular sight protector. The red dot on the Sparq is very fast too. In fact, once you acquire it, you can open both eyes and the red dot seems to float in space in front of you. Opening both eyes also allows you plenty of peripheral vision. Just put the red dot on the target and fire, that's all there is to it.

So I commenced sighting it in. The red dot covered the whole target spot and I was using Federal Bulk Pack ammo. Still, I found out that the accuracy of the gun has not changed at all. Here are some groups. I used standard Ruger magazines as well as the Promag 25 rounder that comes with the kit. With the gun rested on bags, I tried to get the red dot centered on the target spot and fired a series of groups.

The pen is a fine tip felt marker, just a little thicker than your average BIC pen.

Once I assured myself that the gun would still shoot accurately, I started filling mags and shooting to check reliability. Filling a .22 LR 25 round mag is a real pain as I soon found out. I started filling in just ten rounds, then fifteen and finally 25 rounds.
A friend of mine agreed to take a short video so we started off. There are no complete mag dumps as he had to leave very shortly after that.
Of course, once he left, I was able to empty complete magfuls with no issues.



The sound lags the video a little (cheap camera) and the mic. clamps down on the loud sound after the first shot. Still, I'm sure you get the idea.
I'm tickled pink with this setup, this gun is a blast to shoot, literally.

I can see in the video you have some feeding problem, it's all way's happens when you modified anything with the gun.I had a same problem when i modified my M14.

Most of the issues that I had was with improper magazine seating. 25 rounds fit very tight in the mag. With the bolt closed that mag spring cannot compress anymore so it doesn't seat properly. The instructions say to insert the mag with the bolt locked back. The bolt release they provide to replace the Ruger bolt release allows you to just pull the bolt back and release it. Once I realized that I had to seat the mag with the bolt open, the problems disappeared.

Hahaha, very true. I had the same problem when I modified my M14.Did not read the instructions properly.

The problem I had was, I dissemble the gun and when I put everything back together with new chassis, I put wrong flat washer into the gas cylinder.After I put it everything back together, then I fired a few rounds to make sure action works fine but after every round I fired, I have to pull the bolt back to reload the next round into the chamber. Basically I turn semi auto rifle into single shot rifle.

I dissemble the gun again, put back together, but the problem was still there. It’s happens couples of more time.

After all of this, I realize that, I should go through the manual and read the instructions properly. When I go through the manual then I figured out,I put the wrong flat washer in the cylinder.

That wrong flat washer cover the half of the gas port, there for action did not received enough gas to cycle properly.

Here we go again; I dissemble the gun, pull the wrong flat washer out from the cylinder and put the proper washer into the gas cylinder.

Finally, I got it and fired more rounds through the rifle to make sure the action works properly, and now I can shoot semi auto like a full auto. You know about my finger, can’t slow down.

Good on ya mate - a brave step indeed! The amazing thing is that, you didn't have to wait until X'mas for the mind blowing, evil version of this toy - Almost Full-Auto feel (from the video) and 'beat this set-up it you can attitude' huh?
