Dirt can build up inside the magazine insert -- the part that you withdraw to load, and which has the spring and follower in it. I have run a cleaning rod and a rag down these and gotten all sorts of dirt and crud out, which has built up over the years.

Additionally, you want to make sure that this tube and the one that it is housed in have no dents that would inhibit the follower from pushing rounds back into the carrier.

Keep in mind that like any magazine, if there is dirt and crud built up inside it, you will have feeding issues.
As Tim has mentioned, it is relatively simple to keep them clean.
Also keep in mind that tubular magazine .22 LR rifles have been used without problems for decades and they are still being made. The advantage is that you can have a large number of rounds in the magazine without having an obtrusive banana magazine sticking out of the rifle. The only negative is that they take a little longer to reload.
