Serious Shooting!

I recently saw this on another forum and my jaw dropped.
It was shot by forum member "Eggman" on Accurateshooter.com

There are small groups and then there are small groups!
No matter how accurate the rifle and how good the ammo, it takes serious skill and years of practice to do something like this at 600 yards.
Absolutely Amazing!

This is one of the most amazing feats of precision shooting ever recorded. In an IBS 600-yard Benchrest match today at the Piedmont range (Rutherfordton, NC), Forum member Rodney Wagner shot a 0.349″ five-shot group at 600 yards. That smashes the existing 0.699″ IBS Light Gun Record (and it’s way smaller than the NBRSA record as well). To top that, the group was centered up for a 50-2X score, which establishes another record (50 score with small-group tie-breaker). Rodney (aka “Eggman” on the Forum) was shooting a 17-lb IBS Light Gun with a Brux barrel chambered for the 6mm Dasher, a popular improved version of the 6mm BR Norma cartridge. Rodney was shooting 32.5 grains of Varget, with CCI 450 primers, and Berger 108gr BTs, seated .020″ away from the lands.

Very neat indeed but I am not sure if this is skill in the sense most of us understand when it comes to shooting sports. Admittedly I have poor knowledge about Benchrest Shooting because this is largely an American Passion.
What little I know is that most competitors shoot 'recoil free' which means the gun is resting fully on rests and the only part of human body in contact with the gun is the trigger finger. So its much more about precision in a technical sense of the term.

WOW ! I've shot out to 1100 yards where I missed a giant boar by 2 feet so I know well that getting a group that size at 600 yards is just pure skill ! What a fantastic effort.

Wow that's quite impressive! I wish I could shoot like that at 60 yards!

This is jaw dropping feat !
But after going through the mail I want to know more about
1) IBS LIght Gun with Brux barrel. At 17 lbs, it doesn't sound too light to me ....... and
2) The 6 mm Dasher round which is claimed to be an improved version of the 6mm Norma...
I am intrigued. Thanks XL. We all have egg on our eyes

That is a phenomenal accomplishment by any measure.

Many countries where firearms laws are sane, benchrest shooting is quite popular.
MoA and ElJefe on IFG are both avid benchrest shooters.Unfortunately both do not post these days.

And from what I remember of the good Doc telling me, the rifle is very much handheld on the bench. Yes the cartridges are hand loaded and the most accurate barrel, bedded action and all are used.

Absolutely, the gun is not just set in a rest and fired. They use rests but you still have to have butt on your shoulder and you have to aim the gun and perform the trigger squeeze. When shooting at distances like that, it takes years of accumulated knowledge of gun handling, reloading skills and a scientific understanding of firearms. Keep in mind that they have to be able to read the wind and mirage and compesate for it constantly. The wind at 100 yards could be totally different at 200 yards and still different at 300 yards, etc. You also have to keep track of other natural phenomena like temperature, barometric pressure, hunidity, etc. as they can all affect bullet trajectory. When you can finally put all that together, it is possible to approach what this guy as done.
Believe me Bowman, it takes skill and knowledge and years of practice. Unlike COD or other video games like that, it's not a simple matter of putting the crosshairs on the target and clicking the mouse button.

This is what I meant by this...

Do not intend to belittle the sports appeal or Rodney's achievement in any way. What that is on the target is probably years if not decades of refinement in perfecting the mix of barrel, action, stock, bedding, trigger, bullet, powder, primer, bench...and this is just discounting the human factors and other variables like wind, parallax, mirage, air pressure, atmospheric temperature...!!!
And from what I remember of the good Doc telling me, the rifle is very much handheld on the bench.
I'm not very sure about this but again my information is from secondary sources. It appears they do have what is classified as 'unlimited class railgun' competitions where firearm action is set on a platform and aiming is done via vertical and horizontal adjustments allowed by the rest. Of course the competitor still has to work on the elements of wind, temperature, mirage, barrel temperature, consistency of load and so on but there is little possibility of this gun being 'hand held'.

More information on this here...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_gun
However Rodney Wagner's rifle is definitely not of that category. This is what he used...
Capture1.JPG
And perhaps his actual bench setup was very similar to this...
Capture2.JPG
So I am guessing that all aiming adjustments are done at the mechanical rest end?
As a final observation I feel this sport is so closely tied to Handloading and Gunsmithing that it is (sadly) impossible for this passion to even germinate in the Indian gun scenario.

Well IOFB did have rifle team at the big bore competitions long ago...they are very passionate about the .315
Cheer up it ain't that bad. We have 50m and 10m rifle. Both hated by most gun buffs here.

Guys,
I was really keen to see this amazing guy and his rifle...
Source:
http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/tag/light-gun/
This is the equipment he used:
Equipment: BAT Model B action (RBLP Rt Eject), Brux HV-contour barrel (29″), Jewell trigger, March 10-60x52mm (Tactical knobs, Burris Rings), Shehane ST1000 fiberglass Tracker stock.
Chambering: 6mm Dasher (.268″ Neck, .114″ Freebore, Necks turned to 0.265″)
Load: Lapua 6mmBR brass formed to 6mm Dasher, 32.5 grains Hodgdon Varget, CCI 450 Primers, Berger 108gr Boat-Tails seated .020″ away from lands (jumping).
And, this is how the 600 mt firing line looks like
Enjoy
