Griffin and Howe Shop Visit

Few weeks back I had to visit Gurudwara / Sikh Temple at Bridgewater NJ and realized that Bernanrdsville is near by. I looked up Griffin and Howe address and swung by twice.
Griffin and Howe are and were one of the well known Gun shops in East. They did have a shop in NY city and do maintain import and export license from NY state. At present they have two locations one in NJ and another in Greenwich CT. They still sell Blaser, Kreighoff, Purdey, H and H, Dakota arms and other premier brands of guns.
The shop is pretty decent size and they carry lot of used rifles and shot guns especially safari caliber ones 375 and above. These rifles are still $2000 plus. The one I was interested in Swiss arms 270 Win was at their CT store.

There was no customer in the shop - folks were nice and was discussing how India had some of the finest bespoken guns and why they cant be exported..I informed him that guns come at pretty high premiums and crazy prices paid for rifles equivalent to bespoken rifles here. Forget India I cant even get their rifles into NYC without jumping through red tape and hoops just across the damn river and bridge !!

I did see an original Lee Enfield SMLE and then a hunting rifle built on Enfield action. I am attaching few pictures I took with my Cell phone

On a separate occasion I was at Beretta Galleria when they were selling Safari rifles in 375 and 416 rigby to a customer. These rifles were $10,000 ish I believe

Navi, I need to make it over there and check it out! Few things in life are as satisfying as browsing used gun racks, for me, if they hold a lot of interesting rifles. This place looks like a real treat, given how historical the company is.

It looks like they have a nice selection of single shot and other sorts of rifles, so I will want to check it out! Thanks for the pics.

My coworker is a "clam digger" and going across the Driscoll Bridge is like entering another country for him. But I would like to take a trip up that way and see some old sights. I worked just up the road, getting off on exit 33 in a past life. I see on google that the buildings have become health care oriented. So many of those old buildings are filled with other things now -- it is a bit sad.

Nice visit Navi - did you see anything that really took your fancy ? Griffin & Howe are pretty classy gun dealers but my favourites are the small, out of the way gunshops - I just love looking at the stuff at the back of the gunracks and then asking what they have `put away` - I`ve picked-up some real bargains and some really interesting guns that way.

That `Lee` Enfield actioned rifle is an Enfield P14 or P17 by the way ( almost certainly the latter. )

Must have been a very nice trip. They always have some very nice guns on sale on their website.Some very interesting guns. Only the prices tend to be a bit high. Thank you for posting the photos. Anything that caught your fancy?

Thanks guys and Its great you all liked the pictures. I was feeling guilty instead of going to temple I checked this place first then on the way back caught them prior to closing time.

Timmy - we need to meet somewhere soon - may be at G and H and Thunder mountain range at Ringwood manor is near by .

Grumps they have great rifles and guns no doubt but what am I supposed to do if they cant assist me with transfer to NYC with the red tape involved? Other thing is my lack of confidence and expertise at gauging quality of rifles. But these were really nice guns.

This post on G & H reminds me of the time I visited them sometime in 1979 in their NY City premises.

They were located at the lower end of Manhatten in a rather seedy looking area, and there was a speaker cum bell next to a door on the pavement. On answering that I wanted to talk about a rifle, the buzzer went off and the door opened directly into a lift.

I was received by a distinguished looking white haired gentleman with a thick German accent in a room with drawings and pictures of rifles and actions.

I wanted to discuss commissioning a rifle with him, but he cut me short : Which action are you looking at ? Perhaps he was expecting me to mention a square bridge, small ring Obendorf or an SMLE Mk 3, but I in my ignorance could only talk about the Weatherby Mark 5 action

The look on the gentleman's face told me I had made a monumental mistake as he shook his head and hurriedly ushered me back to the lift.

The next moment I was whisked back down to the pavement, and thus ended my visit to the famous Griffin and Howe of New York.
