Soviet Mosin Nagant 91/30

I am rounding out my collection of products from bolshevik dictators!

To add to my Chinese weapons, this morning I acquired a Mosin Nagant 91/30 from the local Cabela's store, which had them on sale for $99.99. Normally, I don't believe in round receiver Mosins, and when I went down to the store this morning to see what they had on sale, there were no "hex" receiver models in sight. The store clerk said he'd never seen one come in the store. Several people bought what they had on the rack while I was there perusing the selection, which was 1943 and 1944 war time production. All were refurbished and in pretty nice shape. However, toward the end of the rack, I spotted one that had a nice (unlike the typically rough wartime) finish. Sure enough, it was stamped 1938 on the barrel, which meant that it might have the internal receiver ring that was omitted in later production to save time and money in manufacturing. (1938 was the last year for the internal receiver ring.)

Upon opening the bolt, sure enough, it had the ring and I had a new gun, complete with all the trappings like bayonet (matching serial number), sling, ammo pouches, and Mosin all purpose tool.

I will post pictures tomorrow.

Thanks, guys! I am a real lover of these things! Until I can get the pic of this new one posted, here is one of yours truly with my beloved Finn M39 (they were built on Imperial Russian Mosin Nagant actions):

Yes sir! I've been eyeing one of those 91/30s for quite some time, as I have a couple thousand rounds of 7.62x54r sitting around and don't want to burn out my M39 too quickly! I've already pumped about 1500 through it, and I am about to the point of wanting to use it for mostly cast bullet shooting. It is a funny gun, the M39: It loves that 204 gr Barnaul hunting ammo from Russia. I have heard others who report the same thing from theirs, as well. So I would probably be looking for a similarly heavy bullet mould for feeding this fellow.

I've also got 4 M91 barreled actions to play with. I picked them up as parts for $5 a piece. One is a real oddity to me, as the barrel the Tsar's crest on it, but the receiver has a large Tula hammer that was used when the Bolsheviks took over the shop. That one will never get cut up, but I have considered using one or more of the others for making a nice sporter. Also, modifying one for 45-70 seems like a great idea, as well, since I reload for that cartridge and there's so much that can be done with it. Having a good, strong action that can deal with the maximum potential of 45-70 would be nice, as well.

Meanwhile, I need to get all the oil, grease, and crud off of the 91/30 and also get back after my RFI 2A project. Just those two worthies alone would make for quite a fun afternoon at the range!

If we can get this IFG meet of the ground, I would especially look forward to shooting those two. It goes without saying that I would also enjoy meeting you.

XL, busting caps and discharging lead projectiles with you would be a real pleasure!

I don't know if it would work out, but I have already run this idea up the flagpole with my younger son's wife, in order to clear the way for bringing a grandson. He would be quite excited and, what's more, he can also talk a little bit about Bollywood movies (heh heh!)
