17 September 2011ABU DHABI — RX Helix is one of the latest hunting guns in the market and it was launched here on the opening day of Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) last night by Shaikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chairman of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court and managing director of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, who was closely involved in designing the rifle.

Made by the German gun company Merkel, RX Helix has several unique features. “Shaikh Hamed, who is an experienced hunter, asked us to create a rifle that has high safety features, does not require a tool box and may be taken apart into small parts to make travelling easier and less obvious,” Oliver Schmider, sales manager of Merkel, told Khaleej Times.

The caliber of RX Helix may be changed in less than 10 seconds and dismantling is done, for the first time for this type of gun, through Take Down system, which basically locks and unlocks the parts. The rifle is then reassembled in just three steps. There are several different models of RX Helix — Arabesque, Spirit, Delux, Carbon and custom made — with selling prices generally between Dh12,000 and Dh15,000.

“We worked for two and a half years to create the RX Helix, Shaikh Hamed being involved at every step,” pointed out Schmider.

“He was also the one who presented the rifle for the first time at the International Gun Exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany, in March 2010.”

“The outcome of that mission to produce this splendid rifle has by far exceeded everyone’s expectations and I am proud to present it to the hunting world,” said Shaikh Hamed.

Interesting rifle, lets see how the overseas market treats it... we of course don't have much chance of laying our hands on one, even to try, let alone buy!

Interesting rifle there.

IIRC, Sheik Hamed is the same gent after whom the Blaser Hamed Duo bolt action double rifle is named.

Hi all,

:agree: For sure it's an interesting rifle, will be surely proposed in the US next year, in Europe the price will normaly be a little less than the new R8 which is targeted by Merkel. As on the Blasers and Merkel Kipplauf and B3 double rifles, the RX Helix has a manual cocking system, the magazine hold 3 magnum cartridges or 4 standart ones. The first models to be sold will be Luxus and high finition ones. In France, which is a big potential market, the RX will be presented to public at the big hunting show in Chambord castle. The Merkel has some very neat features and I'm sure will do well. I don't really see it being much of a true competitor to the R8 but time will tell. To me it's more of a competitor to the Sauer 202. It breaks down without tools and does it much faster than the 202. Both require re-sighting after changing barrels. The R8 offers that little extra that each barrel has it's own scope mounted and zeroed and can be swapped out in a heartbeat without having to re-sight. I've owned a ton of 202s and that is the biggest drawback to the 202 IMO...

Cheers!!
