Hello all. i need your advice weather i should buy a .44 winchester rifle as per information the groves and rifle is in good shape. But i want to know the availability of bullets and the price. Also an hint of the cost of rifle. Thanks all for your time. Ajay

Is it a lever action rifle? Saw a .44 under lever action rifle with a dealer few days back. The rifle was in very good condition and the asking price was 1.25 l. He did not have any ammo for the rifle. Keeping in mind the Indian gun market, this is a low price for an imported rifle most probably because .44 ammo is hard to come by. Hope this helps!

Thanks vineet, yes its a under leaver rifle. I have heard that some dealer in chandigarh is having the ammo.

ajaisolan: Winchester made several different lever action rifles, in two different ".44" calibers. Without a model number for the rifle, and exact cartridge designation, no one can give you the answer you want.

I suppose this is the .44-40 lever action. If so, ammunition will be difficult to come by and not easily procureable when you really want it. Its an old rimmed cartridge round with and unjacketed bullet of 120 grains thereabouts. Ammo might be lying with people who would have had this rifle previously.

However promising thep rice may look , I would opt for a rifle for which ammunition is easily available.

Katana: Bullet weight is, has always been, 200 grains. Also, bullets have been jacketed since the middle of the last century, at least. It is still loaded in the US; "cowboy shooting" has given it a new lease on life.

TwoRivers: thanks for the info. I see some of these rifles turn up occasionally with dealers in my area. However, I have seen ammo with just one person, that too with unjacketed blunt lead bullets
