Hi guys I am planning to buy IOF 3006 rifle I wanted to know whats the variation between a cold bore shot and a warm bore shot from IOF 3006 at about 300 yards.

Just out of curiosity, what is cold bore shot and warm bore shot?

Not much noticeable difference. The IOF has well made barrels although something could be done about the sights. Some people suggest that a warm barrel delivers better grouping but somehow I do not agree on this, although an over heated barrel is another matter. However, it would be rare to over heat one's barrel in a bolt action rifle.

Katana: Group shooting and for that matter even Score shooting is done with warm bore. You will typically shoot a few sighters to lightly foul the bore and read the conditions before shooting your group.

There typically is a an inch or so of difference between the POI of a warm bore shot and a cold bore. Which is a lot when your average groups are in the .1xx range.

The barrel can heat up in a bolt action quite quickly. Put a magazine's wort down range rapidly and the barrel will be quite hot.

MoA: Am quite aware of what you imply. However, since spin_drift was looking at the prospect of acquiring this rifle, I did not want to deter him. Many shooters go in for sighter shots during a competition. in fact the sighter cards or targets are a good indicator of adversaries one will be pitted against during a comp.

All rifles have a different POI between a cold bore and a warm bore shot. Its just a fact of life you live with. Nothing to put anyone off.

to be frank i never knew there existed a warm and cold bore. :oops:i just shoot for the tttttthhhhhhhrrrrrrrrrrrrilllllll i get in my spine whenit goes BANG!still jittering from my last shot..

Hot or cold barrel is a futile exercise in semantics.What matters is the size of the target and how good a shot a person is.

I do not agree with hks2056’s statement.
In Art of war it says something like Know your enemy and yourself… which I believe is not entirely correct and I my opinion it should have been Know your enemy and yourself and your weapon.
Let me give you an example: you are at a rifle range you fire a few rounds downrange say about 25 to 30 and zero your rifle, but the next day or a day after your are in an unfortunate situation where you are compelled to take a mid range shot say about 200 to 300 yards to save a friend’s or a family member’s life and the situation does not give you the luxury of missing the first shot (which would be a cold bore shot)….
What I am trying to say is anything that can happen will happen the best we can do is be prepared for it…..

If you keep the throat of the barrel clean of lead and/or copper deposits, you may find no change or noticeably less change in point of impact between a cold and warm barrel.

Try it and let me know what results you get.

Rusty have tried it and there is a difference. Though I have not done it with an IOF .30-06.

Never mind the ruddy IOF. Which rifle/s did you try this with and what were the results? And don't feel shy telling us if it happened to be a .375 H&H.

I have found this to happen with every single rifle. Even with those cleaned using the much frowned upon method of using mercury.
