hi,
i have been offered a .256 as well as a couple of 30.06 rifles. i would like to know which is a better buy in terms
of stopping power , resale value & price of the ammo.the person is demanding 3.0 for the brno .256 and
savage 30.06 is priced @ 4.5 ,winchester model 70 classic 30.06 for 8.0 & brno k660 30.06 for 8.5.are these
rifles worth the price being demanded all suggestions and help are welcome.

A .30/06 any day. That does not mean that the 6.5X57 is a wimpy cartridge.The 6.5 bullets are inherently accurate and heavy long bullets penetrate a lot deeper than their ballistics suggest.However, that is not in the class of the .30/06.

Also you will be able to get ammo relatively easily for the .30-06
All the rifles mentioned will do the job.
However, I personally, would be partial to the Winchester Model 70 (The RifleMan's Rifle). The Model 70 Classic which was produced starting in 1992, introduced the "Controlled Round Push Feed".
I will admit that I am biased. I prefer the classic American style rather than the European style of stock. I will also always associate the Model 70 with Carlos Hathcock (even though that was a pre '64 Model 70).

6.5 ammo isnt easily available in India. Whereas 30-06 ammo is easily available and comparatively cheaper too.

if u live in India,a single rifle is all u'll ever own, & that single rifle will have to do everything for you including self defence. the 30-06 is probably the most potant cartridge in the world with its recoil on the lighter side plus u'll get the most bullet variety and that too at an affordable price so best of luck!

Value for the money, by far the Brno 6.5 mm, whichever model it may be. Hit in the same spot, neither man nor beast will be able to tell whether it was a .256, or a .30-06. As far as trajectory and penetration are concerned, they are equal. They shoot bullets of comparable sectional density at equal velocity. But in India, availability of ammo should probably be your deciding factor. However, with your limited ammo quota, and ability to use the rifle, is that really a matter of great concern?

Hi Sammy is the 6.5 a full stock rifle,if it is, it a beauty of a gun,but with all the probs of ammo a 06 is a better bet

Sammy as everyone has said 30.06 will always be better , but a word of advise_____ search a bit more and you will definitely find a lot of Winchesters at relatively less price. But by the way where did you get that quote.

thank you brothers for all your help. heeding ur advice i will buy both the rifles . maybe just
shoot the .256 a little less as ammo is hard to come by. now the question remains which 30.06
rifle to buy out of the given choices.btw i am getting 500 cartridges @ RS. 100 each with the .256.

@ grewal - these prices were quoted by a dealer in delhi.

In India even if I am buying two rifles, I would go for two 30-06s. I would best like to avoid different calibers, unless there is a strong and compelling reason.

Piece of advise check posts by Bobby Sidhu and see if purchasing IOF 3006 getting it fixed would leave you with quite a bit of moolah to shoot and enjoy ....then against every one to their own.. Good luck with the purchase yes prefer 3006

I agree, buying two IOF 30-06s and getting them done by Bobby Sidhu would cost much less than buying some old "foreign made" guns. IOF 30-06 when properly refined by a good gunsmith is as good as any "foreign made" 30-06.

Curb the instant gratification instinct and go the IOF 30-06 and customising route.
500 rounds of 6.5 ammo is very tempting, but the prices? He Ram...

Else get the IOF 30-06.50-60,000 for Bobby and 20-25,000 for the dangly bits and you have a nice rifle for around 2 lakhs and a brand new one at that.
