Dear Sir, I want to purchase a NPB rifle.

I have some option in my mind please enlighten me that which one is good in terms of ammo availability, maintains & price.

1. IOF .22lr rifle price approx 40 to 45K.
2. BSA .22Lr rifle price approx 75 to 80K.
3. Winchester lever action .30-30 price approx 80000K.
4. Remington nylon (not sure).22Lr semi auto price 3 L.
5. IOF 30.06 rifle price 1.30L.

Note all price from dealers in Meerut.

Please help me

BTW leveraction rifle looks classical, i like it but don't know if ammo available freely.

If you are new to rifle shooting, the IOF .22LR.; if you've been shooting all your life and can afford the ammo, try the IOF .30-06. However, be ready with a pinch of salt while purchasing an IOF product

I would like to add if the purpose is self defense though the .22lr rimfire round should not be underestimated, but the centre fire .30-06 round when compared with .22lr is ballistically far more superior.

gb_m 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm,the entire 22 cartridge weighs less then a 200 grn 06 bullet so it has to be superior,but here if i may say its a lethal lil pill, Manu please advice the need for the Rifle then only we will be able to give our opinions

Hi Manu,the 30-30 ammo is available but prices do vary from Rs 250-350 a Pop,do check the rifle,if it a very old one,go for the 22 or the 30-06,in lever actions the basic problem that comes is,More the moving part,more the problems.

hi manu, i will say that iof rifles are defintly good,.22 are for beginners,30 06,yes a great one to own.get a scope fixed and you'll enjoy the accuracy.gud luck.

Either of the IOF should be ok , 22 or 30-06
May need some mods to ensure smooth working. Check with a member, Bobby Sidhu here.
As Amit says, the 30-30 is a marginal calibre -compared to 30-06, plus ammo availability is easier and better terminal performance with the 30-06.

Please read the entire thread on IOF .22LR rifle on this forum , it is a real value for money product from IOF. penpusher has given some valuable tips and has posted a concise check list on how to select a new .22 IOF rifle in that thread. If you choose the piece carefully and it feeds and chambers KF ammo properly, you don't even need to see a gunsmith, however you might want to tart up the furniture or get it blued according to your choice.
Moreover, the ammo is reasonably priced ( you need to practice) and the resale will be good in case you want to upgrade to a bigger caliber later. Owning a bigger caliber rifle and not being able to shoot it much because of the over-penetration issues, costly ammo etc and making it sit pretty in your gun safe (read cupboard) doesn't solve anyones purpose.

hi manu, in your previous posts you have given lot of ideas for rifle and i thought you already got one.iof rifle;s are good especially the recent makes.i got a 315 iof yesterday and am extremely happy to own,its accuracy is amazing,never thought it will be. so go ahead with iof,even my previous iof .22 was sure hit for me.dr.jk

I cannot give you advice about which of these rifles is best for -you-, as only yourself can determine that, but I'll give you my limited thoughts on your options here:


1. IOF .22lr rifle price approx 40 to 45K.
What are you wanting this rifle for, are you wanting to shoot it much, is this rifle new? If the answer is yes, then this is probably the choice you should make

2. BSA .22Lr rifle price approx 75 to 80K.
This may be twice the price but I do not believe it would be twice the gun the other 22 is.

3. Winchester lever action .30-30 price approx 80000K.
I love these guns! If you are wanting a rifle for home defense and can get reasonably fresh ammunition this is a great gun. Short and handy yet powerful enough at ranges under 150M. They are not that convenient to put a telescopic sight on but they really are not a gun that needs a scope either, just remember to change the rear sight if it comes with a "buckhorn" style, that is a worthless style IMHO. About the only negative I can say about them is the guns manufactured in the early 70's can have a quality issue. If you are serious about this gun, if you PM me the serial number I can look up the manufacture date for you.

4. Remington nylon (not sure).22Lr semi auto price 3 L.
I had one of these, it jammed an awful lot and I will never buy another because of that damn gun. You may have a different experience but that is mine.

5. IOF 30.06 rifle price 1.30L.
No personal experience with these, but I like the cartridge if you are planning to shoot long range in addition to possibly home defense.

I concur with everything Mark says, except that I had a friend who loved his Nylon 66.
As the Doc says: If this is for home defense, a 30-06 is way over powered. If you shoot a human being with it, it will over penetrate and if shot indoors, you will be in danger of getting hit by ricochets because of the typical poured cement construction in India. Not to mention what it will do to your hearing if fired indoors but then even a .22 fired indoors can hurt your hearing.
